Hmmm, I dunno.

It's mental excercise, but I don't think it's exactly a sport.

A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

So I guess it depends if you consider moving a piece and hitting a clock physical exertion...

It is not recognised as a sport in the UK and receives no public funding. It is worth reminding ourselves why the International Olympic Committee and over 100 countries recognise chess as a sport. Competitive. The objective of a game of chess is to win.

So if I play over the board with triple weighted pieces, it becomes a sport as I am lifting weights!

Changing a baby's diaper takes physical exertion, and you are competing with the baby to keep things dry, especially a boy, who while the diaper is off can fire at will at the wall in front of the changing table, and so changing diapers is a sport, right?

I don't think it's actually considered competing to change a diaper but yeah, you get the idea.

Oh my Buddha!

8 answers, 5 people and only one has read the question correctly.

All answers wrong (except the one from the 9 year old kid and spv1978), actually the question like this is a trap for most people, obviously.

Chess is a sport because it involves physical activity, such as slamming your head against the wall when you lose

Is motor racing a sport? If it is, then so is long distance lorry driving.

Boris Spasskij was known to sweat profusely during matches, so sweat=activity therefore sport?, or not?  in Azerbaijan people get offended if you say not a sport but simply a board game. In America the never-ending stereotyped view that if you like chess you're a nerd, oh but speed hot dog eating yes, that's a reala sport. So on and so on, a never-ending debate.

For me, not a sport. Intellectual activity yes. Robert Fischer said it's like taking a 3 hour exam, afterwards you feel tired.

You were just sitting the whole time for three or four hours, why so tired? Puzzling.

You can find an excellent article on this topic published  in "The Contemporary Review," Dec. 1900, called "A Philospophy of Sport"  by Henry Graves

Chess is not a sport because you do not fight and argue like many sports.

Avatar of ExictedNitrogen

i think there will never be a true answer. i dont know who 2 believe

Avatar of ExictedNitrogen

Well, I suppose you could consider it a sport. Maybe not a physical sport, but its considered the #1 intellectual exercise. excercise=sport? i dunno
