Can you recommend chess books to read just for enjoyment

Hans Ree has a book of stories like that which run about three pages each. I think they were his magazine columns in a Dutch magazine, but the book has them in English. Also look for Karl Marx Plays Chess, I think that is by Soltis, and has just what you were asking for.

Oh yeah, that Karl Marx book was sort of like Chess To Enjoy, volume 2.

The Mammoth Book of Chess Games.

You don't have to follow the games to enjoy it.

My system is surprisingly entertaining. Nimzovich has an amusing habit of using ridiclous analogies to explain every strategic point.

AndyClifton

Of course, you might enjoy it less...

Like the booger thing?  (Gak!  I gave up on the booger thing.)

The Complete Chess Addict
Mike and Richard James. Fox (Author)

AndyClifton

Oh yeah, kco! (that's an awesome one).  Also it's got a sequel or revision or something...

The King's of New York......... by Michael Weinreb. Excellent read. I'd be surprised if a movie wasn't made of this. GM Aleksandr "Alex" Lenderman is a member of the high school team, interesting to read about him in high school.

The Chess Artist by J.C. Hallman is very good.

BattleManager

Karpov's Strategic Wins 1 and 2 are fun to go through.

I really enjoyed Counterplay: An Anthropologist at the Chessboard, which was recommended to me by a friend here at chess.com.

Luzhin Defense - the movie - I saw with my dad, ugh, just a putrid movie, though I'll bet some people will like it.

Yes, it was horrible.  And even from the way they captured pieces you could tell they weren't real players. Wink

Agreed: putrid.

OK. I highly recommend:

"A book of Chess" by CHOD Alexander. This is a huge book that you can dip in and out of. One chapter is on the history of chess in TV advertising - did you know that in the 70's there was a UK TV advert for banking. Its slogan was "How Safe is your money?" with a real chess position in which one player has heaps more material but is going to lose to a forcedf mate: the position is in the book.

"The Chess Companion" by Irving Chernev. Great chess fiction such as "Professor Pownall's Downfall". Humour, jokes and a lot more.

If you can get it this book is timely: the biography of Svetozar Gligoric. I've forgotten the title. I had it briefly in the 80's. It's a huge book abiut his life, games and stuff. RIP Svetozar!

Enjoy! :)
