Let's ask a resident living in Norway

So many things…

  1. The weather. This is obvious, but what is not so obvious is that sunlight is very important to your wellbeing. We all need sunlight. We live on a hillside outside of Oslo and by the second week of December, we were down to only fifteen minutes of direct sunlight per day. I was outside in a thick jacket and beanie trying to absorb as much sunlight as I could during those fifteen minutes. It sounds ridiculous and it is. Also, the lack of sunlight and too much sunlight in the summer really messes with your sleep patterns. Other than sun issues, ice sucks. Icy rain sucks even more. Slipping on ice in April or May is just downright uncalled for. Summer is very nice though, but a bit humid at times.
  2. Hypocrisy. When my wife came to America, she said that all the homeless people made her want to cry. When I came to Norway, it was easy to see that the homeless problem was present, but it seemed like it was only the Roma (gypsies) who were homeless, although I don’t think the Norwegian people see them that way. The oil production and environmental efforts are the most obvious hypocrisy. Did you know that Norway has an ownership stake in Tar Sands? Also, unknown to most, one of Norway’s biggest industries is selling weapon systems while at the same time doling out the Nobel Peace Prize. From my experience, it seems like Norwegians seem to think that they have some sort of moral superiority because they have universal health care, progressive environmental policies and a good social safety net while conveniently forgetting why they can afford those policies in the first place. Norwegians think they can camp anywhere because of Allemansretten, but very few people in Norway actually tent camp and I often see no camping signs even in the forest. Once in Lofoten I tried camping and was actually yelled at from an owner of a house. The house was about two hundred yards away and I appeared to be on unowned land. Allemansretten is an illusion like most things in Norway. They even capped how long you can camp in the forest to keep the Roma from overstaying their welcome. Back to the environment - they proclaim to be pro-environment, but hate Greenpeace. See number 15 for the reason why.
  3. They have a high degree of conformity. In general, people seem to want to dress the same, act the same, think the same, eat the same and do the same things. Being special is a not a positive thing here, it means you’re doing something against the grain. As a child my wife was admitted to the advance swim class, but her parents kept her back in the normal class to be with everyone else. Friday tacos at home is a thing. At my kid’s birthday, he got multiples of the same present. Almost every woman knits and the designs are pretty standard. Once hiking cabin to cabin (which seems to be their form of backpacking) I piled deli meat onto my bread for breakfast. It was a big mound of meat. Then suddenly, I was getting bad looks from people in the dining hall. My wife discreetly told me that I am only supposed to put one topping only per bread. OK, good to know. For their indepence day and New Years Eve, everyone wears suits. I wear my everyday clothes, although I do make an attempt for Christmas Eve. Clothing designs for women come and go, but whatever it happens to be this year, you can be assured that you’ll see almost everyone wearing it. Sundays is hiking in the woods. For middle aged people, a cabin in the woods is the thing you’re supposed to want the most. I grew up trying hard not to conform and always thought that being special was good, so will never get used to that. I think this is one of the reason that innovation in Norway is lacking. Hopefully they’ve saved up enough money in the Sovereign Wealth Fund because once oil is gone or becomes worthless there will be nothing except weapon system exports and shipping to support their economy.
  4. There is a reason why nobody outside of Norway has been to a Norwegian restaurant. Breakfast is bread with stuff on it, like fish eggs (which they call kavier), deli meat, cheese, beets or sweet pickles. Lunch is bread with stuff on it. Dinner might be something else, but it is typically bland. For example, dinner salad is lettuce with a few cherry tomatoes. Salmon is tasty, but if you try to get wild Salmon (instead of farm raised) at the fish market or grocery store they will look at you like you were crazy. Overall the food culture here is below par. As I mentioned, on Friday taco night is popular, but of course it is TexMex. Sad. Grocery store food options are severely limited.
  5. Which brings me to restaurants. Sushi and Thai food do not belong in the same restaurant. I think there might be one Korean restaurant in Oslo. Many years ago, I tried to find it, it was closed, so never got to try it. The small town in the US that I lived in had probably close to ten Korean restaurants and zero restaurants that sold Thai/Sushi or Vietnamese/Chinese or Thai/Chinese restaurants. I’ve seen a couple mexican restaurants, but no other Latin American food. Indian food is decent, but there are not that many restaurants. If you are used to multicultural eating, Norway will let you down. However, there are thousands of Kabob places that seem authentic.
  6. Everyone is a nationalist here. I think there are more flagpoles with the national flag flying than any other place in the world. About 60% of my neighbors have flagpoles. These are full sized flagpoles too. Rising fifty feet into the air. Loving your country is one thing, but I tend to view extreme nationalism as a bad thing. Not Norwegians though. I once heard my wife say that her entire identity was being a Norwegian. I don’t think she was joking.
  7. Slow Bureaucracy. I’ve been here for ten months. Because of COVID, I couldn’t apply for my residency permit in America because the Norwegian embassies we closed. Applied here in Norway which takes longer. Because I have no residency permit, I can work and the length of time I’ve been waiting to obtain my residency permit is a huge problem.
  8. Norwegian are brainwashed into thinking they live in the best country in the world. If you disagree (as witness in some of the answers below) they will lose their mind. You can find evidence of this online when a Norwegian happens to say something negative about Norway and then the comments become brutal. I think this somehow ties into the conformity thing.
  9. Changing personalities. I married a Norwegian woman. Moved to Norway and as soon as we got here, her entire personality changed. I’ve heard similar stories from other people.
  10. Family life. I’ve found that In-Laws are very present. Even if you like you’re in-laws, it gets to be pretty annoying.
  11. Parenting. I think Norwegians have a different style of parenting. Honestly, I think they rely on the Barnehage (kindergarten) to teach kids how to behave. My wife refuses to reprimand our child at all. The other day, our four year old kid threw food something across the table. First, I told him to stop. He did it again, so I gently grabbed his arm and told him to stop. Then my mother-in-law said, “It’s OK.” WHAT? It’s OK to throw food? When I was teaching my kid about spelling and reading, my wife came up to me and said, they’ll learn that at school. I don’t think I’ve once seen her trying to teach him numbers or letters. Different mentality, I guess, but one that I would categorize as negative and dependent on social institutions which seems to be par for the course here.
  12. Prices. Things are expensive here, but not as much as they used to be since the Kroner depreciated. Nonetheless, I still found a can of black beans that costs ten bucks at the grocery store. There is a reason why the owners of the grocery store chains are the richest men in the country. They are ripping you off Norwegians! But that’s OK with them, they’ll be happy to bend over and take it rather than have real competition in the marketplace.
  13. They have a monarchy. Many Norwegians think that the King has no real power but he meets with the governing cabinet regularly, chooses who sits on the supreme court and chooses the committee that picks who gets nominated to the supreme court. Sounds pretty powerful to me.
  14. Their farmed salmon is filled with PCBs. Of course, Norwegians will object to that, but there is documented scientific data showing this.
  15. Very few people actually eat whale on a regular basis. I don’t think many people actually like it. I’ve tried it. It takes like a fishy steak. The only reason they continue to allow whaling is because it is some sort of cultural thing for them. They are also stubborn and don’t want other people telling them what they can and cannot eat. I get that, but they’ll have to suffer the bad press of having a commercial whaling industry. Oh, and they hate Greenpeace because of their stance on arctic oil and whaling.
  16. Social behaviors are off. In winter, everyone is understandably grumpy. No smiles. Little talking on the street. In fact, I rarely saw people outside. Of course, people have to go to and from work, but other than that, they stay mostly inside. I’m kind of in the country out here, so it might be different in the cities. I find most Norwegians very friendly, but I know many people find them cold. However, they do think and behave differently than other people. There are books written about this, so pick one of them if you want to know more.
  17. The language. Yes, everyone speaks English, but you will never fit in here, if you don’t speak Norwegian. Groups try to accommodate you by having everyone speak English, but they don’t really want to. They want to speak Norwegian. Honestly, it is kind of a worthless language to learn. There’s only about five million people in Norway so unless you are living here for good, there time needed to learn a language is probably better spent doing something more productive. I suck at learning languages though, so maybe I’m bias.
  18. Acceptance, racism and white privilege. I’ve heard of African people being introduce as my friend from Africa even though they were born in Norway. I’ve heard of people calling the police and because they did not pronounce “Politi” correctly, the police told them to call back when they learn Norwegian. In Norway, there is a housing club that allows you to get better deals when bidding on a house. Your standing in this housing club is passed down from generation to generation so your standing as an immigrant is basically worthless which institutionalizes discrimination. There are bad sides of Oslo (east side) where black and brown people mostly live and a good side of Oslo (west side) were white people mostly live. As a foreigner, you will always be treated as an outsider no matter what you do. Most like Americans, but even if you learn Norwegian you’ll never be accepted as one of them which is much different than in America where anyone can become American.
  19. Wages. Lower skilled workers will get paid more in Norway and higher skilled workers will often get paid less. However, that is not always true. If you work at a car wash, you’ll probably make less than a dollar per hour (no minimum wage here). Somehow people seem to afford the million dollar (USD) houses and apartments around the Oslo area so some people are making enough to live a normal life. Not the car wash people though and not the people that living in the shipping containers at the construction sites.
  20. Really, I could go on and on. The public transport is good, but it still takes me 90 minutes to go nine miles. Traffic in Oslo sucks. It cost 10K (USD) to get a driver’s license. Gas prices are outrageous. They serve cold popcorn at the movie theaters. Construction of houses appears to be done cheaply. It is like living in a twilight zone version of the 1950’s. 20% sales tax sucks. While universal healthcare is nice, the level of medical care in the US is honestly better. Yes, I know the US Healthcare system is a scam, with an ambulance ride that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, but when you have a life threatening surgery the US is better. My wife’s family considered going to the US for a specialized surgery, but stayed in Norway to do it. The surgery was messed up and caused paralysis from the waist down. The doctor moved to Sweden to practice there after the lawsuit. I guess that is how bad doctor’s operate in Europe, a constant rotation from country to country. Neo-nazism is alive and well in Norway. So is the communist party. Many people are pro-Russia. It’s annoying that store bought alcohol over 5% is not sold in grocery stores and not sold anywhere in the evening or weekends. It’s annoying that everything is closed on Sundays. Customer service is poor. In spring that dog poop that was covered with ice in snow liters the sidewalks. In winter dog pee is plainly visible in the snow every few feet.

Oh no! Did you even read through the points lol. One of the points is literally complaining about the fact that norwegians speak norwegian lol. Another one is that we farm salmon like what?

Yea your fault. fix it bozo. Fix it BOZO

FIX IT !! FIX IT!!!! BOZOOO

Notice how all of the complaints are minor? The complaints about your country is literally large subjects such as simple human rights and corruption. While what you copied is OH NO NORWEGIANS FARM SALMON, oh NOOO NORWEGIANS SPEAK NORWEGIAN. You are actually brainrotted my friend.

Lets ask chatGPT why India is bad!

Hey chatGPT why is India such a bad country?

ChatGPT answered.

India is universally regarded as a "bad country." However, like any large and diverse nation, it faces several challenges that can lead to negative perceptions, depending on one's perspective. Here are a few reasons why some people might hold negative views:

Poverty and Inequality: India, while home to a rapidly growing economy, still struggles with widespread poverty, especially in rural areas. This economic disparity can contribute to a perception that the country is underdeveloped or lacking in basic infrastructure.

Corruption: Corruption in politics and bureaucracy is a persistent issue. Scandals, bribery, and inefficiency in governance can negatively affect the nation's global image.

Environmental Issues: India struggles with pollution (air, water, and land) and deforestation. Cities like Delhi often make headlines for having dangerously high levels of air pollution, which can contribute to the perception that the country lacks control over environmental sustainability.

Population and Overcrowding: With over 1.4 billion people, India is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Overpopulation leads to challenges in housing, healthcare, and sanitation, which can give outsiders a negative impression, especially when shown in media.

Human Rights and Social Issues: Issues like gender inequality, caste-based discrimination, and religious conflicts are ongoing challenges. International media often highlight incidents of violence or discrimination, contributing to negative stereotypes.

Infrastructure and Development: India is still developing in many areas. There are regions with poor roads, lack of clean water, or unreliable electricity, and images of this can contribute to perceptions of underdevelopment.

looks like the rotten egg needs to go into landfill dumps and be left there forever to rot more

So you do know what a landfill is! Why not implement it into your own country?

atleast our citizens dont have a landfill of a mind like u

Again waht on earth is this even supposed to mean. You keep saying you know so many languages yet you lack basic grammar.

You are partially correct, though you comitted a grave fallacy. You see I have never claimed to be good at chess, hell I even admit that I am quite bad at Chess. RDKhanna on the other hand claimed he was fluent in many languages, I never claimed I was good at chess. You see the fallacy you have made?
