Can't get out of 450 in Rapid

I feel like I have a good understanding of the game and what moves are good and bad, and yet I am unable to get out of 450-460. I am rated 1200 in puzzles which I'm sure has no correlation, but it does not resemble any of my 450 rated games in the slightest. I am stuck at around 250 in blitz, so I assume that that is more competitive since it seems the two ratings are exactly the same despite the large difference.

How long have you been stuck at 500 in Rapid?

Probably a month or so at this point.

That's not very long in terms of chess development.  Chess development is notoriously slow and measured in multiple months and years.  It's mostly about time and effort, like many hard skills.  I;m just a beginner and am not expecting rapid development.  My goal is to reach 1000 in 12 months.

That said, the obvious answers to getting better are:

Play slower games (30min Rapid) and play when not tired and without distractions

Think before you move

Do lots of puzzles and drills and lessons

Practice and play daily

After that, it's mostly just a case of keep going.  Good luck! happy.png

just try harder

Your major problem is hanging pieces and missing 1 move tactics. Work on those. That means at each move Ask yourself if there are any free pieces for both sides that you can take. Try doing more easy puzzles as well. Do a lot of these

Thanks, this helps put things in perspective. I do puzzles everyday, I just wish there was more variety/more real game scenarios rather than almost every puzzle being a checkmate. Mid game is probably my weakest, since I know the goals for development and feel fairly comfortable in late game.

You can choose what type of puzzles you practice with in custom puzzle.  Select only things that separate from the endgame and checkmates if you want to work on forks, pins and hanging pieces etc.

How many games do you play?  And with what times?

I usually try and play at least twice a day, though usually 5-15 games in either 10 or 5 minute.

My biggest tip, then, would be to play 30min games, and if possible play more games a day.
