Hi,

Super beginner. Climbed to 600-620 rating. Since then I've lost EVERY single match and im now at 284. I cannot even comprehend whats going on anymore. Feels like I just blunder away all.

How did you go about learning this game? What did you study? Is the Chess.com analytcics worth paying for?

Try going on lichess that does happen there, only on here, where they have a system rigged to make you tilt and then give you a load of easy games. So you end up yoyoing.

You're playing too fast. For example, in your game against Mlarnie, you spent 15 seconds playing the first 8 moves in total. In those 8 moves, you missed a game winning tactic forking his knight and bishop with your pawn, lost a pawn for free castling, and hung your bishop for no compensation whatsoever.

In 5 min games, you have 300 seconds to make your moves. In an average 40 move game, this comes out to be 7.5 seconds per move. You theoretically could have taken a full minute for those 8 moves without putting yourself at an appreciable disadvantage on the clock.

Take more time getting yourself out of the opening.

Ok, so here are the facts. You have this account for a year and a half, and you have played 6 rapid games since April last year. The rest is blitz speed chess. There are some people who can improve by playing blitz.

Based on your account, I would say that you are not among them. But that is nothing out of the ordinary. People who can do that are in the minority. Usually it is very difficult to improve that way.

When you are playing speed chess you are basically playing whatever comes to your mind. If you were a very good player, that can work somewhat, but as you've said, you are a beginner, so it is unlikely this will produce good results.

What to do instead? Play longer games, 15|10 is the shortest time control you should be playing. Make sure to use the time, if you choose a longer game and then finish it in 5 minutes, you are missing the point. You do not need to play too many. One such a game per day is enough if you do other stuff as well. You can skip some days as well even. One quality game is better than 5 speed chess lower quality ones where you lose in a minute or 2.

That is one part of the equation. Along with playing you need to analyze those games, but I do not mean flipping a switch, I mean you need to try to get the most out of them by going through them. At this rating you can't do much of that for now, so at the very least identify biggest mistakes and try to be able to understand why are they mistakes. When you learn more about chess, you will be able to do more. Good analysis should be longer than the game itself.

There is a third thing you need to do if you wish to improve. Study chess. How to do it? There are some free material on YouTube, and there are some paid ones as well, like lessons here, like chessable courses, or books (but in any case you need to find material in accordance with your rating). Practicing tactics is good as well, this can be find in books as well, as well as here or lichess, or chess Tempo for instance.

In short - playing, analyzing games in order to learn from them, plus passive learning that would make you play a bit better plus analyzing better because you know more about chess should help. Do all that for hundreds and then thousands of hours and you should get somewhere. It will take a long while though. Certainly a lot of work but as this is a hobby, you shouldn't force it too much. Do it when there is the time for that.

Perhaps read this as well, it should be helpful, there are some good YouTube channels you might want to check out.
