Take one look at capablanca and the way he carried himself.  His noble demeanor and punctilious manners established him as a man of class, talent, and suave fair.  Listen to him talk in the archived videos of Capablanca.  He spoke impeccable english and flawless spanish, he was from Cuba, a most unlikely place nowadays for world class grandmasters to originate.   he is like a mythological figure to me, as i am hispanic also, but from Costa Rica and a patzer unfortunately.

Morphy was also regarded as a polite gentleman. The fact is most champions of history were. The tendency for world class chess players to be neurotic arseholes is a relatively recent trend.

Cuba has had recently two players over 2700 FIDE.

Leinier Dominguez is currently rated 2757, #13 in live FIDE ratings.

Verdict: Most likely you are just assuming things you don't know.

Nowadays a GM can originate anywhere simply because of the Internet and good books being printed in every language.  I can order Soviet Middlegame Technique revised with algebraic and Questions of Modern Chess Theory too.  Stuff that encouraged Bobby Fischer to teach himself Russian.
