Carlsen or Anand

I want to use this forum post as a poll; to see how many people support Anand and how many Carlsen. So the question is: Who are you rooting for in the 2013 World Chess Championships, and if you hate both Anand and Carlsen, who would you want to win the 2015 World Championship?

TheRandomGrandmaster

I'll go with Carlsen, although I want GM Wei Yi from China to win one day when he is older.

Carlsen

najdorf96

Since Anand and i are the same age, i'd be gratified if indeed, he could hold on to the title. But then, i truly believe Carlsen is the "Second Coming" of Chess (obviously since Fischer). Dunno.

I predict that Anand will win. Next year Kramnik will win the Candidates' tournament, and in 2015 Anand will retain his title once again.

Ziryab

I'm rooting for the old guy. If I were betting, I would want some odds.

EAPidgeon

Tough call, my instincts say Carlsen, but Anand defended against Kramnik so it's still extremely close imo.

Dare-Dare

I think Carlsen has the edge.

I agree, although I wish it were not so. I hate to see kids beat up on old men.

bean_Fischer

If there is something up there, I'll go with Anand.

This is a short 12 games, so tactically both players may try to get an early win and then close shop , play solid drawn out games. If this occurs, then Anand may fair well.

That's the fear (gaining an edge and closing it out), so what these short matches usually give us (in the first many games anyway) are very solid safe games.

@wafflemaster

what would be the alternative to this 12 game match? Just wondering.

Dare-Dare

Well then again if they go to tiebreaks like last year the winner gets less money...That may be a good incentive if the match is tied up. But may also be a bad incentive if a player is leading and they want to win so they play solid chess.

Dare-Dare

But Anand is not that good anymore so I predict the score will be semi-lopsided in Carlsen's favor.

Maybe it would be interesting to bring back the old formats....remember the first world championship duel: Karpov vs Kasparov...

Yep, I think everyone would like that (well, maybe not Anand in this particular case... a 3 month match vs his young opponent may put him at a disadvantage due to stamina).

The problem is with sponsorships and money or something like this.  At least that's what they say.  I think chess is popular enough.  It may just be that Ilyumzhinov is too busy taking rides in UFOs to be taking his job as FIDE president seriously.

Dare-Dare

Haha yes that's why I want Kasparov to win FIDE Presidency! He might care more...

Best of 24 games.

First to ____ wins.

The first Karpov Kasparov match was ended without a winner because it was taking too long.  It was first to 6 wins and after 48 games it was 5 wins to 3 and was controversially called off citing Karpov's health... was he really sick or was it because Kasparov had started winning?

Anyway they started over and it was best of 24 and Kasparov won.

Dare-Dare

Wow the Wikipedia article says it all..."claims to have personal contact with aliens". Doubt that's true!

Dare-Dare

@wafflemaster

In the best of 24 this would give a significant edge to the younger player, in this case carlsen

I predict that Carlsen will win. Next year Kramnik will win the Candidates' tournament and in 2015 also WCC title. :)
