Carlsen - world champion rapid player.

After being comprehensively outplayed in the classical form of chess, Carlsen proves what we all knew, that he is the best in the world at rapid. The fanboys will have all sorts of excuses for game 12, but really it was a gutless effort unworthy of a world champion.

After the 12 draws they should have moved into a chess/ boxing then chess/ man v food playoff. Then we could see who had the biggest guts.

2 games and what did he do with them ? Game 12 he shamed the title of world champion, game 1 he showed his new vulnerability. Does not alter my point he was comprehensively out-prepared and outplayed. The glow of invincibility is now just a flickering 40 W bulb.

Sure, you can say he's looking vulnerable, not at all the same Carlsen we knew in 2013-2014.

But you can't say he was comprehensively outplayed.

OK, maybe my disappointment has made me exaggerate, but I do believe he was generally outplayed. I am not a Caruana fan by the way, my disappointment is the way it ended. Game 12 was pretty appalling and not worthy of a world champion.

This is the way I see game 12:

Caruana weakened his kingside which gave Carlsen good attacking chances.

Carlsen chose to leverage his attack to create a position that in practical play had only two results: either he wins or it's a draw. Once he achieved this position he offered a draw knowing he was favored in the playoff.

Was is cowardly? Did is show lack of fighting spirit and all of that? Sure, but it was Caruana who gave him that opportunity. Caruana had white in the last game after all, so why should Carlsen be playing for a win in the first place? That's how I see it.

Is Caruana's strength equal to Carlsen's in classical games?

I guess no one can argue that this is not true now. Drawing 12 games in a row and having a nearly equal rating makes it pretty much impossible to argue otherwise.

But in the past there was no playoff. In the event of a tie the champion kept his title.

Kasparov drew Karpov and retained his title too. Carlsen isn't the first.
