This forum is to discuss Carlsen's and Caruana's preparation for the World Chess Championship.

First, it seems odd to me that Fabiano Caruana is scheduled to play in the Isle of Man Open from October 20 - 28 and then start the World Championship match just two weeks later on November 11th.  Is this a wisest use of his time? I guess time will tell.

Also, does anyone know who's assisting both players in preparing for the match?

Yes, I am helping both of them. Thanks for asking.

Do both of them know that you're also helping their opponent?

Maybe Fabi just wants to keep himself sharp, or he was already committed to playing.

Playing an event so close to the WCC. I like the idea of it. Seems better than taking ~5 months off... but what do I know, I'm not a pro player.

What did players like Carlsen, Karjakin, and Anand do in the past before their WCC match?

I’m sure Rustam has assembled a team for Fabi and they’re hard at work.

Fabi is a kind of a new breed. The night before the final round of the US Championships with the title on the line Fabi went and hung out and played some bughouse rather than burying himself in his apartment and doing nothing but prep.

Granted. He went home by about 10-10:30 pm but the point is that he seemed to value relaxing a bit more than sealing himself in a bunker.

The next day he won against Onischuk although it wasn’t enough since Sam crushed Awonder and took him the title.

Again, I'm no pro, not at all

But it seems to me that doing prep during an event seems way too late. I agree that you should just relax.

I guess there's an issue of losing competitive tension if you relax too much, but still.

Well they prep individual games prior to the game. A lot of players will prep at night so that their ideas are spinner my around in their brains while they sleep.

Then a bit more leading up to the game.

I was stunned to see Fabi hanging out but I was also impressed.
