Ok, now I understand -- what's confusing players is the way you word it.

Because it was completely up to black to enter into a Caro it's referred to as Black's defense.

White can't play the Caro Kann defense, he can only play against it.

The way to say it is "Nigle short beat Seirawan's Caro Kann with ______ variation.

Or you could say I like the way Short plays against the Caro eg with _____ variation.

When you say white's Caro Kann it sounds like you're playing a reversed system where the white pieces mirror a black defense and are a tempo up.  That's why you see a lot of players explaining the london system, slav etc.

MASTER WAL,  THANK YOU FOR FOR APPRECIATED COMMENTS and yes, i have to learn, the opening or defenses the way and color they were meant to be

                                                         thanks  tony

MASTER WALL, THANKS FOR YOUR COMENTS AND YES, I HAVE TO PLAY THE OPENINGS AND DEFENSES WITH THE COLOR THEY WERE MEANT TO BE

ALL OTHER MEMBERS THAT RESPONDED, THANK YOU, AS YOU CAN SEE I'M TRYING

LEARN  FROM OTHERS A ND IT DOESN'T WORK TO FOLLOW  STEP BY STEP IN THE MASTERS' GAMES.  THEY  ARE MUCH SMARTER AND KNOWLEDGEABLE  IN CHESS, THAT THEY  WILL GET MANY  POTENTIAL PROBLEMS TO WORK IN THEIR FAVOR

                                                            THANKS  TONY  antne003
