But frankly, Covid may have just killed classical chess formats. Online tournaments have made people realize that shorter time formats mean fewer draws, more exciting games, a much better viewer experience, and more interest in the game. Those five hour draws in the world chess championship were horrid and unwatchable. Watching the commentators tell rambling stories to fill time was painful.
Caruana not playing 2020 US championship in October?

I just noticed this, looking at the lineup. I'm guessing it is because of the Candidates tournament in November, but I haven't seen any articles on it. Anyone know any more info?
I was going to ask the same. Does anyone know why Caruana isn't playing in the U.S. Championship?

BTW. the US championships (mens, womens, girls, boys) are all on-line and all with a 25/5 time control.
That makes the odds of Caruana winning much lower compared to a classical tournament, vs Naka or So (or even Dominguez?) and maybe that was part of the decision?
Probably better psychologically to go into the candidates fresh and without a recent (probable) disappointing finish in the US tourney.
But to side track a bit,
1. I think they should play over the board. I'm not in denial about the covid situation, but the event could be controlled adequately with testing and social distancing. There would be less exposure for the players than a trip to the grocery store.
2. Why are 1,5,10,15, and 25 minute games OK on-line but nothing longer? Why not start some classical on line competitions? Require an independent arbiter in the room with each player throughout the game, plus a random judge who could drop in occasionally unannounced, plus cameras etc. Seems very doable to me, and still much cheaper than the travel and accommodations for an OTB tournament.
