He called me a 'noob' on my profile page after I lost in one of our weekly Correspondence games. Of course, I deleted said comment afterwards.

I saw that, but I think he actually called you "niubbo".
I think you get them for private messages. So for example if he messaged Eric or staff about a question or replied to a welcome message.
