Castling or Keeping the Initiative

Sometimes I don't know which to do. . . is it better to go ahead and castle early in the game, or make plays that keep the initiative and develop more pieces?  (when white)  Seems if I castle, it gives them the initiative or a tempo.

Keeping the initative is better, but you have to appreciate :

  1. if your king is safe in the middle
  2. if you need the rook in the corner...

unless u have a clear view toward a win,o-o.In the middle u often have create a fortress to save yourself.

Castling is like any other move. o it when it's the best move. many times it's unnecessary to castle at all.

Winnie_Pooh

I think that in general it is better to castle in time.

It takes special pawn structures (interlaced pawn chains) for the king to be safe in the middle and it is usually a disadvantage if the rooks are not connected.

My experience from more than 30 years of tournament chess is that not to castle goes wrong more often than not.

It is by no means a bad idea to avoid castling in order to pursue the Initiative.  The Initiative is a valuable asset to any player looking for the win.  It is important to realize, however, that the opponent may be able to seek critical counterplay on your uncastled, susceptible King.

So looks like unless I have a very clear great attack, I should castle asap.  Thanks guys.

Was thinking a bit of THIS game of Blake's vs THE MAN.  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/playing-bobby-fischer2

LaughingDavy, when I play black.. I like a version of the kid cause you can castle fast. I get into trouble against good players with it, but then you can "fine tune" it.Undecided

Master_Po

I'll look into it...i have a book by Bronstien I think all about the KID.  Looking forward to reading my 20 books over the next 6 months.   Today's the first day in 8 months I have not played or studied chess.

LaughingYabbut, you're talking about chess!Winkface it Davy, you think about chess moves "away" from the board!Laughing

Master_Po

Yebbut, that was an accident.

I think I heard Dzindzi say, I don't like castling because usually there's a better move.

Then again, it can't do a lot of harm to protect your king before doing anything else

to illustrate, here's a game where I thought about this thread, and postponed castling, immediately this backfired on me even though I got out of the opening pretty decent against a much higher rated opponent.

Completely missed a tactic on my king.

But later on so did he, managed to win it eventually, but probably should have castle earlier or played a different move than queen to d7
