Casual OTB chess - finding someone to play against

Do many people here have problems finding someone to play casual games with OTB? I know a lot of places have chess clubs, but at least at our one the atmosphere is very serious. I usually prefer something a lot more relaxed and sociable. I used to live in St Petersburg where a lot of my friends and aquaintances played so fixing up a game with an opponent of a similar strength was never hard. But since I've returned to the UK it's been very hard to find anyone to play against. Indeed, are people actually interested in playing OTB any more, or are most players content to play online, without actually having to leave the sanctuary of their living room / bedroom / toilet? Genuinely interested in people's thoughts.

sadly I don't think this person's looking for the serious atmosphere of tournament play.

A lot of chess clubs these days will have a social page. For example my hometown city has a discord for their club, where the meets are announced and people can talk to each other. Your area's clubs may have a facebook page or a discord or a website. You can meet people there and maybe play outside of club meet hours.

Tournaments are great, but it's not always what you want. For starters it's a big commitment for time and mental energy. Sometimes it's nice just to sit down in the relaxed atmosphere of a coffee bar / wine bar / park etc and have a few casual games without the pressure of a tournament.

London I'm sure doesn't have an issues at all! I actually live in Lincoln, not Barnsley. We have a Wednesday night chess club which is popular but quite serious, plus I run a monthly blitz night in a craft bar. It's a very chilled vibe, but as I'm the organiser I can't actually play!
