I started when I was ten because it was a way to spend time with my father on Sundays before he went to work. (He's a carpenter and takes on small jobs on Sundays when his employes have the day off.)
Causes of chess
I have a DOS copy of Chessmaster 2100 that I run on my laptop under a DOS emulator. I even have a copy of Chessmaster 2000.
My dad did teach me, but there were so many other games too which invited my friends over. One in particular also played chess, and we played regularly matching wits. But once we got to middle school, some kid named Matt whooped us both and in Carmen Stan fashion we thought "This game sucks". Chess returned in my life when I would go to the library and see books on openings. I worked summers at this camp and there were other groups of friends but they sucked. Ok, that means the game no longer sucks for me!! I beat everyone except this guy named David, club player too. In this case I didn't feel so bad and he taught me a few things. In high school I would return to playing chess with another friend. He would almost beat me, but he made blunders near the end.
Either during that time (due to the Bobby Fischer movie coming out) or after college, I bought a book which listed openings and may have had some games listed. I was studying music theory and quickly thought if I could memorize openings like I memorized scale patterns in music it might help. Well, sure if you have an einstein memory and can live to be 500. I had no concept of tournament chess, 2 hour plus games. From the list I probably chose Philidor to play as black, and did that until the internet arrived. By that time Kasparov was in the spotlight like the Michael Jordan of the chess world. I was able to play chess online for real, just like when Joshua asked David in Wargames. Between 2003-2007 I stopped playing chess regularly and did Japanese chess, shogi. It's a very exciting version. I am in China now, but I can't seem to get into xiangqi. Just not my thing I guess.
It's funny how you detailed so deep yet you didn't answer me how old when you started chess. Nice history though.
I'm not sure how old I was - in my earlier teens though - when I started playing chess. I would walk a mile and a half to the nearest Radio Shack and play against their TRS-80 Model III. The chess program had errors and was not all that great, but I still rather enjoyed the game. After that, it was here and there against real opponents (most of whom were poor at it) and one chess program after another on a variety of computers. Eventually, the internet brought me to correspondence chess and I fell in love with it. I still do not care much for blitz or any games that I cannot take an hour or two to consider my move when I wish. I suppose my real education started with Chessmaster 2000 on an old DOS PC and continues to this day. ;')

Very very interesting story.
my dad locked my up in my room with deep thought and would only let me out if I could get a legit win.
that's where my sheer astronomical playing strenghth of 3500 elo stems from, and for this i am very thankful to my father to this day.
My lord! 3500? Your dad really did something harsh and turned out it was worth it.
We all started chess at different times, I started at 5 but wasn't so well played since barely anyone teaches in China. Until I arrived to U.S. there are many teachers and people that can train us to become even better.
However, what was the reason why you started playing chess? Mine was because the way pieces move which fascinated me a lot. Please don't lie, tell the truth.
