Cheating on result sheet at local tournament

This was a kids tournament.

All time controls I've played in USCF have been at least 1 hour, with heavy increment, and typically it's 2 hours + 1 SD or 90+30 for game.

The situation was unfortunate, but it's nothing representative of USCF in general.

I started playing chess at around 7, and back in the city where I grew up (part of China), there were plenty of cheaters in tournaments. As cheaters will acquire their "fame" and never improve in chess, you and your son will find less and less cheaters in higher rated tournaments or in older-age groups. No need to feel bad, tournament is not about ratings or points especially if your kid is only 8. I think it's more about meeting other kids and making great chess buddies that will grow older and love chess together. Good Luck.

So sorry to hear that..... I guess it is best your son learns at 8 and becomes wiser for it....

This is the kind of thing that dissuades people from getting involved in USCF play. It's extremely unprofessional, unorganized, and sloppy compared to FIDE. Luckily, I live close enough to Manhattan that I can play FIDE events regularly when I'm ready to because between things like this and the ridiculously fast time controls they embrace, the USCF has become a joke.

You, personally, may hate fast time controls, but that doesn't mean the USCF is a joke.

In my opinion, and I know I'm not alone, the USCF is disorganized, sloppy, and unprofessional compared to FIDE. Local clubs don't enforce rules, they lie about the time controls they played (truth) in tournaments, and they use equipment that isn't even regulation size. Nobody says anything, nobody cares.

I'm not some kind of prolific player with tourneys all over the US, but I've played in a few different states, and I've never noticed anything like that.

Although one time two kids wanted to play their tournament game using a jumbo sized set. I think the king was 12 inches tall. There was extra room in the playing hall where they could set it up and play without distracting other games, so the TD let them do that.

I do agree with you though that it's ridiculous they rate G/30 as standard. IMO that's totally embarrassing. I even think 60 | 0 is too fast to be actual tournament chess.
