CHEATING POLL

I’d like to conduct a POLL. Here is the question, and then I’ll expand upon it.

Have you EVER, at ANY point in time, consulted a chess program to make ANY move for you in ANY chess game and NOT let your opponent know it at that time?

I have a sneaking suspicion that about 72% of you will LIE, but I think this will be a fun poll nonetheless. Now, you must answer YES even if you consulted a chess program for only ONE move. You must answer YES even if you did it only once A LONG TIME AGO and then never did it again. You must answer YES even if you confessed to your opponent at a later time, but at THE TIME, you didn’t tell. EVER, AT ANY TIME, without telling your opponent.

Rest assured, this is not about exposing people or setting you up to be knocked down. It’s not some sort of confessional. It’s about: did you give in to temptation?

I’ll welcome any story that you feel you MUST tell to go along with why you did what you did. Ok, I’ll start it out.

My name is cheater_1 and YES I have cheated. In fact, I ALWAYS cheat. Legitimate chess bores me to tears. I have been cheating for over a decade and continue to do so. There, that wasn’t hard. Ok, your turn.

ps. It’s the people that DON’T respond that worry me.

Does using the Opening Explorer here on chess.com for the first few moves of a game count as cheating?

If so, then yes. Embarassed

PawnOfAThousandPawns

No, Opening Explorer does NOT count. It is not a chess program, and it is only for the opening moves.

I am not lying when I say I have NEVER EVER used a chess program during a game to help me make a move or something.

El_Gremio

well.....when i play online chess, i like to wear a tiny....oh wait...sorry wrong post!EmbarassedWinkSmile

antoninl

um...no but I might try it!

cheater_1

I'll take that as a YES, gremino.

zymodog

Cheating doesn't teach you anything! So whats the point of cheating on an online chess site? I know to some people ratings matter, but they're not your ratings if you dont get them. I do use chess programs to help me better learn the game, but my rating is my own.

Bruiser419

No, I've never cheated, and if you need proof, just look at my games.

ianmetcalf

nope

i like to play online chess because it gives me the flexibility to analyze my moves.i play 3 or 5 days per move games for this reason.i have a slight better chance against more advanced players although, it seems that i lose just the same but at a slower pace.i play for fun, to challenge my brain.its a cool gameSmile

I will answer yes. My instance of consulting a program falls under the criteria listed.

ddavi16

Never cheated at online chess.  I thought about it once but I couldn't find a position calculator for free. (I still won the game)

Markle

Well i have been playing for over 35 years, I play OTB chess, online and have played postal chess in the past and i can honestly say that no i have NEVER cheated in a chess game in my life.

fury_pk

I have - and would if im in a winning position and some one disconnects during a match (purposely) - then ill teach them a lesson with mate in 23... =)

Furyofthequeen

I will occationally consult opening explorer for lines i am unframiliar with, but thats not cheating, so no.

o-blade-o

good question, but; the truth i don't need to ask a chess program to play for me...

feyterman

so, how many liars so far? lol

lastwarrior2010

what if computers ARE allowed?

kyleevon

I have never cheated at chess in any fashion, it would remove the challenge form the game

Phelon

No I've never consulted a chess program ever in my whole time hear at chess.com to help me make a move in one of my games. The only thing I've done is run a line or 2 over with my dad, who is rated 400 uscf below me, before I made a move just to see if I missed something really obvious. I did not receive any ideas from him, just asked him if my line looked sound to him.
