Never consulted a program during a one on one game. but I have in vote chess games and to my knowledge it's not cheating to consult with a program in VOTE chess games.
CHEATING POLL
cheater_1 "Have you EVER, at ANY point in time, consulted a chess program to make ANY move for you in ANY chess game and NOT let your opponent know it at that time?"
I have only been playing and studying chess since December, and this site was my first exposure to online chess and the idea of chess programs being used to suggest the best moves to play. I would have to say YES to this because I do use the Openings Game Explorer while playing the games that I have so far here on chess.com. I know that many do not view it as cheating unless you are playing live chess, but as a beginner to the game I can say without a doubt that in my online chess I have done so far I am guilty of using it as I could not come up with the opening moves myself. Heck, I am still not able to tell you the names of 99% of these openings. I am sure as I learn the game I will be able to manage these openings more on my own.
But, keeping in the spirit of the question, I do not see how using the opening explorer for online games can be much different than other programs. After all, the game explorer allows a person to access the best move based on games played in a data base, not usually from a player's memory (In this, I am indicating a new player such as myself). The explorer lists the moves from most often used to least often used... and as a beginner I am guessing that if there is not a response listed, it would be a move one would not want to use. The list changes based on the previous move made by your opponent, so I am thinking that even this data base, although allowed, does fall into the category of computer assistance (at least in my beginner's eyes).
I do bring this up, as it is obvious that this is considered the same to many others, as it is not allowed to be used in live chess games from what I understand. Anyways, happy learning and good gaming to all of you!
why oh why, is ANYONE entertaining this????????
WHY OH WHY are chess.com staffers entertaining this??????
seriously, why????
i know, why does chess.com not have a page where we can all stand up and say "yes, its me, i cheated! suspend my account and kick me off the site!"
seriously, i'm starting to believe the conspiracy theory that Erik is cheater_1 as that is surely the only way this diatribe can be allowed to continue!!!
by the way, i am not dignifying this "poll" with an answer either way regarding cheating. i will leave it to cheater_1 to make the judgement as i'm sure he no doubt will.
In OTB play in the League I am in using a chess engine is expected during adjournments to check tactics. Does this qualify? If this does meet the demands of the poll YES, otherwise NO.
No I've never consulted a chess program ever in my whole time hear at chess.com to help me make a move in one of my games. The only thing I've done is run a line or 2 over with my dad, who is rated 400 uscf below me, before I made a move just to see if I missed something really obvious. I did not receive any ideas from him, just asked him if my line looked sound to him.
That's cheating, according to the site rules.

Yes, it is cheating! Check the rules of the site...turn based chess and vote chess allow program use for the opening databases only - not running the engine.

well it was an unrated game LOL
hey cheater_1 give me 10 reasons why you cheat at chess...
and have you ever played yourself?
im just curious...
Yes, I cheat in every game I play. I believe that this therefore makes me a better player then my opponents cause clearly they aren't as smart as me if they don't even cheat to win. Better go boost my inflated ego more somehow. Not sure how though, debating asking a forum community whether they ever cheated in a game before. Cause like I know they'll say yes or they're liars. Yeah cause the only thing cooler then cheating at chess is asking a question while making it clear I already have my opinion set.
Cheating on chess.com is not just immoral, but also exceptionaly stupid. What's the point in letting a computer play for you?
I like winning, and I realy care about my rating, but the point is, that it is my rating, and not some engine rating. I realy can't understand the cheaters.

I don't use them in EVERY vote chess game only when they are allowed. (ie chess .com vs cheater one, humans vs computers.)
i don't have the time to buy a chess program
