What's the deal with Chess960? I know who invented it, and I understand how it works, and I get that it has it's own discussion, but does it help improve your day-to-day general chess skills? Such as, forces you to think quickly and adapt?

Or is it like Blitz? Something to avoid until you get down real skill?
No one with ratings below 1200 ever play, so I'm assuming it isn't for beginners.

Lots of chess involves heavy opening preparation, and 960 more or less gets rid of this- so it is like playing "real chess" from move 1, at the same time testing your opening skills, without spitting out memorized moves.

In daily 960, obviously it has nothing to do with thinking quickly, but in live 960, you have to play correctly from move 1 in a randomized position, so its definitely more on your feet there.

I'd recommend it.

It's crazy! But a nice change from standard chess and it sure makes you think fast when playing it live.
