When ahead in material...Intensify your efforts!, trade down pieces, and try to keep the game simple! When losing...complicate things, try not to don't trade down, get creative, and never give up!! :)

Just keep playing. Puzzles and reading about chess helps, but the only thing that makes you good is by simply playing. You'll get knocked down quite a few times, but that's really the only way to do it.
