How dumb would you have to be to believe that? 

Chess is none of those things, it's a children's board game. 

Karpov is former world champion and wanted to be president of FIDE, of course he's going to talk up the game he is famous for.  

It's interesting for idle amusement and thought experiment only, there might be some sort of interesting scientific ideas in there but it's not how 99.9%-100% of the time is actually spent on it. Also you can have scientific thinking about connect 4, pokemon, tetris, pieces of mud or anything else. It's a hobby. However there are plenty of other more productive and interesting hobbies. Even if your hobby is say watching netflix well at least you're analyzing human relationships and behaviour. Chess is a game for children where we pretend there are knights and kings and queens on the board, it's a joke.
