Chess and Music
BTW, I prefer silence
Here's some music for you
John Cage's 4'33" performed by William Marx
Got the headphones on at the mo. .....Squeeze..cool for cats..not so much when i'm playing..but certainly an influence when i'm posting..got to be careful with that...i like hard n' heavy sometimes.
Ooh, thought their early stuff was kinda lame (tossed my vinyl in fact). But once they got to ArgyBargy and Eastside Story they was rockin'.
Way back in the old days (the 1970s) there was a guy who used to come to tourneys with a reel-to-reel tape deck and these big old headphones (I even had to play him once). I think he mainly listened to classical.
Yeh i like classical..Esp. the chill outs, some of them are movie themes.Schindlers list, but played on the classical giutar by john williams makes me wanna cry..brilliant. de bussy ..clare de lune..Love music :o) I am a musician..so anything i like..Bruno Mars is high on my list at the moment.
This isn't an exaggeration, but I always listen to music when playing. Thanks to Internet Radio I got my hands at every thinkable genre, and mainly I listen to Jazz, Techno Minimal and, when I'm in the mood, to Classical stuff.
I noticed that not listening to music severely lowers my concentration and 'mental grip' at one game.
Ehm, yes. Stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_voht-3HKvA
Or, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJg3u8NwA7A
At least, I'd call it by that name ...
I won't be able to argue for or against it, the borders between the different genres are pretty blurry.
Lately I've started to listen to music while solving tactics or playing against the computer or on-line. Just put my headphones, search for something on Youtube and enjoy the sheer beauty of chess and music. My favourite music while playing chess is Classical, some symphony by one of the big names from the XIX century, Mahler, Brahms, Bruckner and I reconcile with my fellow human beings.
Techno Minimal?
He means Minimal Techno. Hope that clears things up.
"I listen to Radiohead when I play chess."
You poor thing!
Why? I quite enjoy listening to Radiohead. It helps me concentrate when playing chess and doing homework. I see no reason as to why it is something to pitty.
This is all very interesting. I see people on the train who are able to study and read and have music on at the same time. It's the same with chess. Some brains respond really well while mine doesn't like the multi tasking. I'm either listening or thinking. Perhaps for those who can do both it's like dance. That's a lovely thought. I don't mind a little chamber music in the back, you know, a string quartet, a bit of Beethoven, a splash of Satie, but I won't be really listening. As an experiment, I am going to put on some Killing Joke and play a blitz game. I'll let you know how it goes.
