I was wondering if there was anybody out there whom chess had affected his/her sleep for a while, if so would you mind to comment of the issue and what helped you get out of the situation

note: just wondering, I have talked to several people who claimed that chess affected their sleep, so I wanted to know if there was more people with the same problem out there

affected it in a bad way? or improved it? or reduced the amount of it?

i personally feel more mentally exhausted after long chess games, so it makes my sleep more sound. now, i do find that (esp. with the online chess) i tend to stay up an hour or two later than usual, so i get a little LESS sleep.

I've found that I can visualise my positions in current and completed games to a certain extent. I can't see the whole board like the proficient blindfold players can but I can see a pretty defective whole picture of the position by seeing small complexes of pieces and by referring to square colour or square notation when I can't remember where a piece is.

Yes this affects my sleep. I find myself taking great pleasure in looking at chess (imprecisely) during the time when I put my head down each night. This has the two extremes of effect, I either can't sleep for hours because chess is too interesting and my mind won't let it go, or the opposite effect; thinking about chess puts me to sleep very quickly.

I remember at the Kramnik / Leko match, I think it was game 1 where Kramnik had 2 rooks to White's queen. Kramnik ended up winning, but the end game lasted a long time.

Kramnik later admitted to spending half that night trying to untangle his rooks in his head.

It doesn't happen often, but when I have a particularly interesting game or position, I have been known to dream about it.

I do remember one time when I made my moves and went to sleep. My head hit the pillow and like a thunderclap, I realized I just threw a game away. I remember that being a rather restless night.

I have had dreams where I was actually playing Laughing But I can't remember the moves when I wake so I don't know what the quality of these games were.

Chess has definately affected my ability to sleep in a negative way. When I am laying there drifting off to dreamland, my mind wanders to different things until it shuts down. However, if it wanders to chess, the mind just keeps working and never shuts down. It is very mentally stimulating, so I have to have the self discipline to not think about chess when I am going to sleep.

This is pretty funny. I have had similar experiences. I don't play chess in my dreams for some reason, but I always dream of the most awesome music. Then when I wake up, I can't remember it well enough to write it down. If I do remember it, the harmonies usually come out wrong, or by the time I am done writing it out, it just has 'the wrong feel.'

Chess shouldn't be too addicting that your sleep habits get messed up...
