On a basic level I consider chess above a mere game. As is well known among the Higher Level players Chess is considered a rarefied art form. Yet for the beginner chess is an impenetrable maze. Art or visual puzzle? I side on the side of art. There is no way one can play a truly good game without creating something that is at least in part a work of art. Art is meant to be shared with others & because few chess games are preserved in their entirety for future perusal Chess is like building sand castles. Here one moment gone the next. Chess is not a puzzle on the level of Rubric's Cube , for example. Two people are involved not just one & there is only one predetermined result acceptable for success. Art is a lovely surrogate fulfillment as Ted Kazinsky (The Unabomber) so eloquently argued in his manifesto. Read Kazinsky's Manifesto for a full explanation of Surrogate Fulfillments.
