In our school in the UK, the guys in the chess club weren´t only considered nerds becaus they played chess - they were nerds! I only left because I wasn´t as good as them ...

There are very few sub 2000 players over sixteen in Russia because of this.

Given the right socio-economic environment, Chess can be quite "studly," as per the description above.  Just like the famous one-liner by the Irishman in the Braveheart moviem, to wit, Chess..."attracts only the finest people."
