ghenkis nearly every country did something like nanking. Its hardly something unique, in most wars its like that.

Scottrf

No, most wars aren't like that. Very few countries have done anything as bad in the modern era.

But this is getting away from how much it costs to play chess again.

That's great, but I didn't say anything about Nanking

Donald Trump's hobby of marrying a new 23-year old blonde every few years seems much more expensive than chess

More fun though too.

im sorry ive got to take responsibility for this argument, feel like ive kind of started it,  the reason i got a bit hot headed is im surrounded by alot of bad shit, but this is going a bit too far, c'mon guys, chill out

fair do's us scots and english will give each other verbal forever, its always been like that, we all live in the same place, but this is going international now, and its not nice, at the end of the day, we all have our faults and argubly its our goverments that are the cause, not the people, so just chill guys, please

Scottrf

You're right, Shima seems a good guy, my fault really.

I think playing the piano is more expensive, espcially if we're talking classical training and competitions.  It'd be interesting to compare the two.

but that being said i believe japanese are still the most honorful people in everyday life.

I know you cant judge by ther heritage what a person comes from. But in general i would guess social pressure and education makes the japanese the most honorful people i ever encountered in my life. I have went to many places and they for example sell you old food, but sushi cooks are always honest. They are also so nice and helpful and well mannered. Women always think before they carelessly say something wrong.

Well its all subjective but i believe it to be true.

The reason you find Japanese people most honorable might be that you have a Japanese notion of honor. Wink

A simpler explanation might be that chess teachers and chess book authors are doing work, and they want--and deserve--to be paid for their work.

Agreed.

Plus, lessons are not that expensive really. You can find IM's on this site giving them for $30 per hour. As an hourly wage, that's hardly extortionate.

Pat_Zerr

Chess being expensive?  I just built a chess board from an old piece of plywood, and the only thing it cost me besides time was the cost of stain & lacquer.  And then I got a $30 wooden chess set to use on it.

I still have my handmade folding wooden chess set I picked up in the Philippines, which I think I paid maybe around $10 for.

This is like any other hobby, it just depends on what you want to spend on it.  But the game plays the same with a $30 set or a $300 set.

right, just sterotypes. But we are agreed that all french people are uppity and probably not fit to wage war. As my friend said, France even lost its own civil war. No, I kid the French lol. I like your fries and toast.

Never have understood the average American's weird ideas of the French.

The Vietnamese kicked the American's asses just as bad as the Frog's.

The books, lessons, tournaments, they really cost tons of money... why?

Chess isn't any worse than any other hobby. Bowling, golf, hunting, whatever.

You want to see exspensive?? You should try Magic:The Gathering.

That'll max out your credit cards REAL fast!

Well for starters, here's their idea of a car:

Is it really that expensive? I remember playing a bit as a kid because a friend liked it. Never really got into it.

I can't imagine it costing too much.

Then again, I had another friend who was into all the Games Workshop stuff like Warhammer and that did get expensive. With that there were always new armies, items for your map etc (probably not even using the right terminology)

I just would have thought with cards, once you have them you have them.

I play quite a bit of MTG. I usually have over €1k tied up in physical cards (which change as the formats change) and €500-1k in the online version. It does make me (a small) profit, but some people spend a ton on it.
