Chess board mimicking online moves

This is just of a bit of concern to me now since over the past month, i have taken chess seriously.

Always, when i used to play I used to have a real chess board set in front of me and whatever moves my opponent did online, I made them on the chessboard and then thought about them. It took a bit of extra time on my part.

So is it okay to do so?

I mean is this technique recommended or should i get over this?

Plus i tried playing without the chess board and i lost all seven games ( almost all due to very silly blunders) and my rating dropped from 1500+ to 1300's.

So should i continue playing without the board and get used to it after losing a few (perhaps dozen) more matches or should i turn back to my real chess pieces?

If you are talking about Live chess, some people think it is against the rules but as long as you are not making analysis moves on the board, you should be fine.

I'll try to find another topic I took part in that had a lot of dicussion back and forth on the issue, in case you might like to read it.

I would be thankful if you can post a link to that topic here, will really help me out.

Plus what percentage of the people are doing the same thing that i am doing?

Martin_Stahl

I'll post that link as soon as I get to a computer. As to how many people play that way?  Probably not very many but most that do are doing it in longer time contols.

is 15+10 long enough?

Martin_Stahl

That is a personal question. I think someone would need at least that amount to account for the extra time to make the moves on both the board and screen.

As to the topic I'm recalling, it looks like it may no longer be on the site. The original poster may have had their account closed. There are a lot of other topics about it but not any I'm aware of that discuss the issue as deeply as that one did.

Nevermind, my search must have turned up a bad link. Here is that topic. It starts off with a different question and some of the posts are not related to the use of physical boards but a lot are:

Just read the article.

It's a bit off topic but thanks a lot anyways.

And i will continue to use the physical board, helps me avoid blunders and surely justifies the extra amount of time it takes.

After loosing 8 consecutive matches, I used the physical board in the next and won !

So the result is clear I guess.

Real board it is ( though will work on my timing a bit now).

I use a physical board, like you do, but only for slow games, slower than G/20. This feels more natural, and is easy on the eyes (I have a long history of slow OTB tournaments). It's perfectly legal for online LIVE chess, as long as you follow the touch-move rule.

I'd say about 80% of that topic was discussion about using a physical board.

it was but the thing I was asking wasn't if it is allowed, rather it was if its recommended.

Would you recommend it for say 15+5 games?

Martin_Stahl

The question of if it is recommended, kind of ties into the allowed part. That said, if it is recommended depends on you and why you do it.

If you are training for OTB play, then it probably is a good idea. If you aren't, it really doesn't matter and would be personal preference, one where just learning to get better with the digital board is a valid suggestion too.

The delay or increment would give you enough time to make the moves on the physical board, but only if you are very familiar with algebraic notation (i.e., if you don't need to look at the letters and numbers at the edge of the board). But even so, G/15+5 is borderline too fast.
