Chess board/chessmen size

I'm getting my very first chess set!!! I want some suggestions for the sizes. I've looked at the house of staunton and I'm thinking of getting the wooden board with 1.75 squares. Is this too small? I just want to use it at home and not for tournaments since I'm only practicing. Also, if I get the 1.75 square board, what size of chessmen should I get? Is 3 inch for the King too big or just enough??

Thanks for helping out guys!

Personal taste, really.

3" king on a 1-3/4" board:

and on a 2-1/8" board:

I prefer the less crowded 2nd board. A 2" square would be better yet for my preferences.

As the Goldendog said, it is a matter of preference.  The "standard" varies slightly but it involves the ratio between the diameter of the king and the size of the square.  If your king is 1.5" diameter and your squares are 2", then you have the "perfect" .75 ratio.  I believe the USCF prefers a .78 ratio, which is the relation of a 1.75 diameter king to a 2.25 ' square.  There are other ways to see if the pieces fit the board, such as the old 4 pawns to a square rule, which doesn't always work exactly either.  Let your own set of aesthetics be your guide.
