Completely agree with Absurd from Canada, "Chess Fundamentals," by Jose Capablanca is an outstanding first choice.  Its short, addresses the fundamentals and is easy to follow.  A great foundation on which other works can rest.   Also concur with the advice to work through the book with a chess board at hand.  Good Luck!
