hello,

i have this ebook and i am struggling with it. i wanted to see what others see when looking at some of these problems.

all it says is find the best continuation.
these are two separate puzzles. i didn't get them right. i wanted to know how someone would proceed to solve this. is there a routine that someone would follow.

I solved them both in a few seconds, but I used to teach a chess course that included thematic tactics (which helped solve #1) and model mates (which helped solve #2).

There's an old trap in the Petroff Defense that is quite similar to the solution to your #1:

All I can suggest is that you brush up on your thematic tactics (pin, fork, skewer, overload, sweeping and sealing, line opening and line cutting, windmill, etc) and on your model mates (Greco, Lolli, Corridor, Smothered, Morphy, Broken Fianchetto, Epaulette, etc).

The first one was 1. ... Nd4, since 2. Qxb4 can be met by 2. ... Nxc2+. Black loses the Queen.

The second one is 1. Ne5 since the d6-Pawn is pinned against mate (1. ... dxe5 2. Qd8 mate).
