I have it turned off. It isn't necessary to the game and is sometimes distracting and annoying. People may be salty or toxic after losing or winning a game. I suggest to keep it off unless you want to communicate with a friend

It doesn't happen to me too much not (although still occasionally with some inanimate objects looking like pieces or checkered patterns looking like a chess board). Look up "Tetris effect" This isn't too uncommon, especially when starting out and putting a lot of time into something (such as chess).

Almost never is the chat used in rated games, but there is a slightly higher chance with longer time controls. I leave my chat on, but almost no one uses it and quite frankly: I don't really expect them to. We are here to focus on the chess game and talking is just a distraction.
Playing chess and chatting with chess.com friends accounts for about 90% of the cases where I do chat during games, but typically even game advice I save for giving my views on in the post-game analysis time.
In short, "no" I don't think "chess chat" is too important at all - it is a nice feature to have when you need it, but it is seldom used.
