Opening Principles:
1. Control the center squares – d4-e4-d5-e5
2. Develop your minor pieces toward the center – piece activity is the key

Tactics...tactics...tactics...
Pre Move Checklist:
1. Make sure all your pieces are safe.
2. Look for forcing move: Checks, captures, threats. You want to look at ALL forcing moves (even the bad ones) this will force you look at, and see the entire board.
3. If there are no forcing moves, you then want to remove any of your opponent’s pieces from your side of the board.
4. If your opponent doesn’t have any of his pieces on your side of the board, then you want to improve the position of your least active piece.
5. After each move by your opponent, ask yourself: "What is my opponent trying to do?"

Lookingforacoach1, go to thechesswebsite.com to learn strategies, openings, and endings. Or, solve some tactics here. Press the three lines and then press tactics. Also, play against the computer. Turn on Show Best Moves to win. Then, remember the moves and try again but turn it off. The main things are: Piece development, center control, and king safety. Use the King's Gambit, Queen's Gambit, or English Opening (My favorite). Note: they're for white. For black, use French Defense or Sicilian Defense. The Poisoned Pawn is also good for white. Try out the Four Knights Game and Halloween Gambit as well. The Fried Liver Attack is super aggressive and great for white. The Halloween Gambit is not as powerful but very fun to play. Hope this helps!

Learn some tactics too. Some great ones are the Decoy, the Windmill, Deflection, Poisoned Pawn, and the X-Ray.
