Has anyone volunteered?

not sure about coaches but i'd be glad to help as more of a study group type thing and maybe my coach could look over the games we analysed but he's only 1938 OTB

I can see that the request is a good one. I taught Soccer for 27 years here in my home town. I have a United States Federation B level license. I taught year round. I never wanted to charge anybody, as I didn't do it for money. I got my pay by the satisfaction that whom ever I train performed better.

Of course some of the things I did they required that I got paid. As a state coach staff coach many time I never submitted the final papers to receive the $200.00 compensation. The coaches I trained still received their licenses.

Many times some one wanted to hire me to train a team for $500 for four sessions. I wouldn't accept the offer. Then another coach would ask me to help him out, I would show up, with a skip and a jump just to help him out, without any money being paid to me. Many many times they would give me a gift, or restaurant paid card as gratitude. I would accept it graciously.

I have taught chess for many years without pay. Then the city demanded that I sign a contract and I had to get paid. I signed the contract for $90.00 an hour. I didn want the money, they set the price and were even willing to go higher. Now the city is broke and they cancelled everything. They will not allow me to do it for free.

I am teaching chess at the library for free once a week. They called me and said they want to pay me $25.00 a session. I had to sign a form because they have some stipends to use up.

Oh well. It seems that I can't just can't win for loosing.

If I were in the position to need some chess coaching I would join our local chess club and there are high average player willing to teach someone without any pay.

I also teach bowling for free. I have a silver level license.  The USBC organization seems adamant that I charge for my services. Their schedule is $20.00 for 30 minutes. So when they send someone to me that is what they expect to pay. I won't charge them anything. I teach free every Saturday to 60 junior bowlers and offer to teach anybody else with an appointment.

The reasons I don't charge is because I had four boys to teach and I learned all those skills by playing, getting knowlege and I liked sharing what I know. If I give any of my knowledge away to someone and the benefit from it, I really haven't lost anything.

They gained something and funny that I never gave anything away, because I still have the knowledge within me.

                         I just feel good.

To  GeordiLaForge; the answer is no.

DENVERHIGH, the world needs more of you. Not about greed, or money. But about the satisfaction you get from having people learn and improve. Seems like you are a very good, genorous, and genuine person. Thanks

PlayToWInTheGame: Having your games analyzed doesnt really help me. Sure it tells you the best possible move. And shows you your blunders, mistakes, and inaccuracies. But it doesnt tell you why it was a bad move. And doesn't teach you the theory behind everything. I believe a real person helping another real person, is the most beneficial way of learning. Much more than having games analyzed by a computer, playing the computer, reading books, or memorizing opening lines.

I've read over and over again that Masters suggest you analyze your own games.  Really great players use computers to improve their own game.  So if you aren't willing to do that yourself, on your own, then you are just looking for a shortcut.  Sounds like you want something for nothing.

Good luck to you, but if you are 1800 strength and you want to improve to over 2000+, then how many hours of free lessons do you think that will take?  And also I doubt that you are actually 1700 to 1800 strength OTB.  Have you playing in OTB tournaments?  Do you have a FIDE or USCF rating?  If you try that, don't be demoralized if you end up with a Class D rating.

Regardless of what some others have said, tutors of any subject generally cost money.  And their services are worth paying for.  If you can't afford it, then thats ok.  You have no other choice but to do it own your own.  If you aren't willing at all to do any of that, then I think you don't really love chess enough to excell at it.  Its hard.  It takes years of work.  (And again my brother is a Candidate Master so I'm not just blowing smoke here).

Edit:  OH!  My brother (the one who has a rating of over 2100 USCF) never had a tutor.  Never one time.  Everything he knows is from reading books and learning it on his own.

Godspawn, what are you talking about in regards to attitude???

curodd

godspawn, i agree what exactly are you referring to about attitude? answering questions truthfuly? another player offered some advice and he declined.  Should he simply accept that advice to be "polite"? i guess i dont get it, this thread could have 0 responses, if you are not willing to help so be it, but if not that why discourage? i guess it just deosnt make sense to me.  his post was honest, to the point...what exactly r you looking for?

Im not discouraging him in the least.  I wish him well in finding a 2000+ coach that will teach for free.
