Chess.com can and should do something about abandonments

one of the reasons ppl don't play long time controls. nobody wants to get stuck waiting 15 minutes the clock should run out in a 30 minute game. cuz your opponent is a bad loser... chess.com should make it that if ur opponent hasn't moved for 3 full minutes that you win the game .

They can’t do something like that, if I am trying to calculate something very complicated in a 30 minute game it can take much more than 3 minutes. If the position is easily winning and my opponent isn’t moving then I usually just start another one while I wait for the move.

there should be such a choice while you create your game.

secondly I don't think you can play another game while you wait on the app.

what time controls is op talking about?

most of my games are 30 min rapid
i saw the "abandon gamers" in the sub 1000 range and it only happened a few times; i would wait them out (mainly because any type of victory was good then) and i could just chill and watch something on my phone

i also made sure to block anyone who was an annoyance

i havent run into any abandoners lately

This is a problem in Daily Chess, too. Today, for the second time this month, one of my games was aborted because my opponent didn't bother to make a move. I don't understand why someone looks to get matched up for a game, then doesn't bother to play.

just saw on another site that as soon your opponent left game to run out clock instead of resign they give the option to claim victory.... this is another thing chess.com should think of.

That's not right, because what if that person was trying to return? it's happened multiple times to me on this site. The way it is right now is best, If u can't even wait the full time u agreed ur opponent to have, and wait it out then why would u choose that timemode to begin with? choose something short like 3 or 5 minute blitz or even bullet if ur that sensitive. U choose a time mode like 15|10? Then u deal with the fact that ur opponent can have upwards of 15 minutes to use. Deal with it.

I can't deal with it so I'm not. 10 minutes is max I play not ready to wait 10 minutes for nothing while my opponent already left the site cuz he saw he is about to lose. this is reason number 1 ppl don't wanna play longer time controls. מבין?

a guy can sit staring at a mate in one for as long as he wants, until his flag falls in real chess. why should chessdotcom be allowed to break the rules of chess to satisfy impatient people ?

to stick up against bad losers who is trying to punish you for winning the game. you sign up to play not to stare at your m8 in 1...for the next 10 minutes instead of playing a new game with another opponent

That's completely meaningless and unfair. You never know the reason for the abandonments. Nobody has the right to penalise them. If you are not patient enough to wait, play bullet or blitz games just as RedGirlZ  suggested....

rishikeshwaran

Ok, let's assume that you've started a 1 min game against someone. You are playing black and just before your opponent makes his/her first move, someone knocks at the door and unfortunately, there's nobody else in your house. What will you do? Will you make your guest wait for you until you finish your game? When you come back it shows that the game has been abandoned as you haven't made the first move. So, does that mean you were unfair to your opponent?

Smositional

I don't get it. You all should be glad that chess uses a clock at all. Also it's your fault for playing a 30 min games. Take the free win and stop whining.

rishikeshwaran

It's not really the player's fault! He/She is not accountable for bad internet connection.....

Smositional

Why are people so entitled these days? You want everything for free. Free wins, free money bla bla

whats wrong with looking on the bright side. previously when someone disconnected or stalled in a lost position, i would think "yes! another win". at least the time counting down let me take a little break before the next game. some people don't like losing so they get upset, that is all understandable, they play to win. i accepted that, so it made no sense to get my knickers in a twist if they did some trash talking or stalled, its human nature, total waste of time getting upset, a win is a win is a win.

I totally agree. The funny thing is people complain when they lose and they even complain when they are winning. It's funny how people always find a way to whine about something.

Meh...just find other things to multitask with while occasionally checking the clock.
