Chess ethics

Would you consider trying to trick your opponent using theatrics during a game unethical?

Let me specify: You have prepared a novelty for a game in which you and your opponent had reached a certain position before. When it comes time to play this novelty you purposely lead your opponent into thinking the move is bad by picking up the piece and hesitating before completing the move -in combination with either a subtle head shake or sigh or both.

yeah, that's low class.    Also banging pieces onto squares when you think u are winning lacks class too.   Don't do those things.

though when you get to the key position, do not necessarily play your novelty immediately -- alerting your opponent you planned this.    Rather take your time before playing.

Just because you took a lot of time planning a certain position in advance, does not necessarily mean it is correct.    For instance, on the highest levels -- World Champion Botvinnik had saved ( did not get to use ) a novelty against the Gruenfeld Defense from his earlier World Title match and got to spring it on the great, 19 year old Bobby Fischer in the 1962 Chess Olympics.    Fischer refuted it over the Board !    Another time US Champion Frank J Marshall prepared for years his gambit in the Ruy Lopez.   He got to spring it on the great Jose Raul Capablanca.   Capablanca found a good line over the Board and won.

Thats right up there with staring at your opponent, slamming the pieces down, drilling them into the square.  If that intimidates you, dont go outside.
