Chess experiment: how do exogenous LEGAL agents affect chess playing ability?
Wine makes me feel more pretentious when I play, does that help?
But it is a good question. I wonder how much of an impact "smart drugs" would have on a players ability, especially at the highest levels. I mean, it is reasonably safe to assume that a huge percentage of the worlds athletes take PEDs (seeing as folks like Lance Armstrong, etc, never failed any tests), I wonder if some of the top competitors in chess take their PEDs for the same edge...

Most smart drugs are not illegal at all. They are also known as nootropics. They are just a mix of vitamins and certain (legal) chemicals that seem to either work on their own or in tandem to enhance cognitive function. I have never taken any (outside of vitamin b complexes, fish oil, etc) as I'm scared of messing up my head permanently, but competitors at the highest level are more likely interested in any edge they can get.

amoskof: and are there also some smart drugs legal who do the opposite? messing down your head so that you are thinking less?
They're called Antidepressants

LOL. That had me laughing (there is alot of truth to it too, sadly).
The problem I have with nootropics is that it is very experimental and there is not a lot of research on long term effects of many of these compounds. If you take steroids as an athlete, you need to cycle them on and off. If you stay on steroids without cycling off of them periodically, your body stops producing testosterone, for example, and then you need steroids for the rest of your life just to survive without serious metabolic disorders (or just to survive at all).
My fear is that certain compounds or chemicals may have unknown long term effects which just haven't bee studied enough yet, and I don't want to risk my brain for a few more IQ points.
If you wanted to supplement fish oil, b complex vitamins, etc, then I wouldn't worry about long term effects. These simply mimic things we should be eating (like beef liver, sea food, etc) but generally don't eat enough of in the western world. They will likely help to some degree. But supplementing anything we don't find in nature, or over-supplementing things we do find in nature (too much of a good thing can kill you) just scares the pants off of me.
and i would like to lose some iq points - any stuff for that?
Watch TV! Lot's of reality soap!
Or, it might leave you just staring at the board!
While simultaneously snacking and carving pipes out a piece of wood...
I agree with WalhallaRoad, however the intake has to be moderate. Personally, I feel most focused and when I've had a light mix of THC and Caffine.
Listening to intrumental music also helps.
admister one inhalation of purified highly potent cooked cocaine, smoke one fat blunt of top grade nursery weed of the gods, have one shot of Hennessy Cognac, not too much just enough. Then play a game and be sure that you will play better. the use of exogenous legal , semi-legal, and outright illegal substances.
jog then a spliff and iced coffee.
I like to listen to philosophy lectures while I play. even though i zone it out, i like to feel as if having intelligent stuff in the background gives me an edge. but my ranking sucks, so...

You forgot the 40 of Old E to go with the blunt...

I've gotten to play chess a few times while on nootropics. Mind you, I am not that great of a player I just enjoy playing. A few friends and I spent an afternoon playing chess against each other after taking some Sunifiram (a cognitive enhancer that focuses on the AMPA and GABA receptors) and compared to all the other times that we had gotten together to play I noticed an obvious improvement in my overall strategy.
Has anyone else tried using nootropics while playing chess and seen any improvement (or deprovement).

Water, foodstuffs, vitamin supplements, mineral supplements, herbal supplements, legally obtained ethanol, legally obtained THC, legally obtained stimulants (such as caffeine); how do these things impact upon your chess playing ability? Please post your experimental results here...
Sincerely,
The Professor
