This is a strange thread, ankitt.

There is nothing wrong with pursuing even the maddest of goals, but you seem to want to have a lot of assurances before you try. You ask about earnings, and seem unwilling to accept that it's a dire picture -- you wish to become a grandmaster beginning your chess studies at a quite advanced age -- not impossible, but very unlikely.

You're basically asking whether you will be able to make a decent living if you decide to become a chess grandmaster. You become insulted by the responses you receive here (responses quite similar to those I would receive if I announced that I wanted to become an astronaut and would abandon everything to get into space). So you ask Silman, an IM who has worked hard to become one -- making certain you mention how badly you were treated in this thread.

I can actually give you an answer to the question you have posed both here and to Silman!

After reading Silman's answer, did you go through all the variations of the French which he discussed? Did you go through all the examples, every line - either in your head or on a board?

If not - then the answer to your question is no, you won't make a living being a chess grandmaster. If you did, then you're not entirely without merit. I don't know of a single chess talent who isn't devouring absolutely every single diagram and line about chess they come across.

So - you already have your answer. Did you go through Silman's discussion of the French?

Wasn't the French someone else's question?  I'm confused.

Ankit. All the best for your game against GM arunabi.

And that's the point. Silman's discussion of those lines in the French is very interesting, and if Ankitt wants to become a GM, he should be interested.

That discussion by Silman has to do with chess as it's actually played, inspired by a recent GM-game -- and is very unrelated to "can I make money by trying to become a GM if I start in my early twenties?" So, quite simply, if he studied those lines, Ankitt's got part of his answer: he appears sufficiently chessobsessed.

What did you think about the discussion on the French? Personally, I'm skeptical to lines with the black Queen on b6, usually that Queen is best placed on her starting square, controlling two fine diagonals. Silman's examples show a number of alternatives. I have never liked the Winawer, and I learned something new when it comes to the bishop move that was the reason for the question!

Hey friend, If Ur just into earning start planning for teachn chess rather thn play'n in every tournament. Here in Mumbai U cn earn Rs.200/- ($ 4/-) each seat'n.

But if U want 2play and make it Big in newspapers... thn it is around Rs.7000/- ($140) each tournament's average 1st Prize money. BEST OF LUCK!!! See U in coming tourneys...

btw; Ur profile says U R frm 'Bombay'- as there's NO such place on earth plz change it 2 'Mumbai'. Thank You

Lol what ? 7000 Rs or 140 $ is not big tournament prize money, mostly it averaged 250000rs or 5000$ for first prize. Whether i will come first or not, it is all together different matter. ?If you need confirmation, download any tournament prospectus from indianchessfed.org, they will tell that i am right.

Get with the program Afaf. Becoming a GM's easy nowadays, everyone's trying for it.

Oooh.  I want in on this.  Where do I sign?

Nothing of the sort is required. All you need to do is believe in it.

I think most of the answers here have been negative.

I don't want to abuse language on the board, so the nicest way I can word it is that if somebody told me not to do something, I would tell them to go shove it.

It's very hard to make a living at any sport, not just chess. A lot of the top players are in the media and if those are the only ones you see, then you get a bit of a distorted view - in other words you're not seeing thousands of others. Also, a lot of the players who are in the top have to put in some many hours that they can't work and end up being sponsored.

Never live with regrets, (or as few as possible). I would make your life two-fold - one working at chess to see how far you can go competitively, the other, if you need to make a living, to see how you can do it within the world of chess. That way, you'll have the best of both worlds.

Too late. She's all bitter now.

I would love to make a living out of playing chess, but I am also realistic, given certain factors in my life that I've had to accept, one of them is knowing I'll never be as good as I want to be at it. Chess, like everything in life, requires a heck of a lot of work, just like most sports, lawyers, etc. If you KNOW you have what it takes, then more power to you. Smile
