Chess for Oldtimers --- Good Idea !

Never heard that theory .. but who knows?  For years "they" said margarine was better for you than butter -- then "they" said "whoops, we got that backwards."  Same with "all cholesterol is bad for you!" and "Never eat more than one egg a week!" and "Fitting yourself for shoes by X-raying your feet in that machine at the shoe store is a Great Idea!" and "A good tan protects you from sun damage, and suntan lotion can keep out the "bad" UV rays and leave only the "good tanning" UV rays!" Etc., etc.

Thanks a lot for all of these new posts.

I always loved that scene from Sleeper, Mil, because it puts the lie to "settled science."  For anyone who has studied the history of physics, or the history of any science for that matter, you know that the concept underlying any discovery can change, for example from Newton's concept of gravity as action at a distance to Einstein's concept of gravity as the warping of spacetime.  Unfortunately, the popular conception of science is "absolute" knowledge when genuine science is always contingent on the scientific method and falsification, as Karl Popper put it.

A cute little item that I found: " You are getting older when you've reached the age where, legally, shorts can be worn only in the privacy of your own home. "

Thanks for the late Sunday night laugh, Ralph.

can't remember where I read this but I think it fits with what you just said Bob.

"That which is sure is not science, that which is science is not sure"

Nice and pithy, Steve.  Thanks!

PoolPlayerToo

pithy, a new word for me,  Always impressed by your vocabulary (unless you have a lisp)  :-)

Dear PPT,  I must come to fb's defense here.  He was absolutely correct in describing your "science is not sure" post as "pithy."  You see, there's one thing I've always said about fb, and it's something I'm always glad to reiterate:  the man may not know everything, but he does know pith.  -- Yours truly, mil

Thanks for the late night chuckle, Mil.

And humor, obviously.  Humor and pith, he knows both of those.

Thanks for the new posts.

Well perhaps my title for this thread has scared people off ?  lol, I should perhaps have called it Chess for people who have been around the block a couple of times. However I do love to play the game even tho I'm at a very average level allways keeping in mind that I'm also getting lots of mental exercise while involved in a fun activity that I enjoy. There is one minor ( but quite aggravating ) problem tho that I've been noticing. I will be in the middle of a game and suddenly my mind wanders off and next thing I know I've made a boneheaded move and messed up the game. I mainly play Live Chess try to keep the game moving ( set at 15 and 10 ). I had a nice litte game going earlier today and for no logical reason gave away a rook, with no return of material, maddening. Perhaps this type of problem is one reason that we see very few older players able to keep up in high level tournament play ? Well I'm off to get another game, maybe this time I can get my mind to concentrate all the way to the end of the game  lol.

I like this quote from Edward Hoagland: " People tend to gain in tolerance and grow more generous-spirited as they older, but on the other hand we often lose connectedness and some degree of interest in what's going on, so our generosity is not all that expensive to us. "

Good one!

Thanks for the post Motherinlaw.

I recently came across a cute item from the late great Rodney Dangerfield. This was from later in Rodney's life: " I'm at the age where food has taken the place of sex in my life. In fact, I've just had a mirror put over my kitchen table ".

motherinlaw

Ah, yes ... Rodney, speaking for all of us, as usual, about life's losses and disappointments, and reminding us that we're not alone, just by getting us to laugh together.

(Sorry, I know analyzing comedy can suck the life right out of it ... lol...)
