I said "dadblasted" the other day.

There is no point in life without both joy and misery.

The only constant is chess.

And, it brings some of each...by golly.

I was wondering how this thread keeps going for so long. It seems like it's been within reach of the first page for months. Then it occurred to me that all you old guys are having the same conversations over and over again.

Or...as the old (but very true) joke goes: the great thing about Alzheimer's is that you get to meet new people every day!  Alzheimer''s is quite possibly tougher on family & friends than on the patient...dagnabbit!

I gotta tell you, this is the craziest bunch of claptrap to come down the pike since I was kneehigh.  It's just a bunch of goldarned hooey, that's what it is.

I think we've just about killed this meme (or at least shot it in the knee), gosh darn it!

Chess can only be good for the mind.

Yep, sure worked for Fischer's.

The downside is when he went off his chess medication there was a terrific rebound effect.

There must be other "sports" (I don't consider chess a sport, BTW) where they had lunatics at the top.

Iron Mike Tyson in boxing, is one. I wonder how that ear tasted?

bigpoison

I remember hearing David Robinson refer to Michael Jordan as a "lunatic".

It was during the "Dream Team" olympics, I think.

Gotta put the ear bite in context. Not excusing it, but it came after repeated head butting by Holyfield.

Well, you know, that wasn't the only strange thing that Tyson did. Not to mention that he spent 3 years in prison (sentenced to 6) for rape, smashed a really expensive car into a tree, married three times, tattooed his face, was a contestant in an Argentina dance contest, diagnosed as bipolar, arrested and convicted for DUI and drugs, beat up a photographer...among a number of other interesting episodes.

You know, come to think of it...Bobby Fischer and Mike Tyson are both from the same home town. I'm from there, too. I wonder why, of the three, I am the only normal one? lol

I'm 68, and 'returning' to chess (just on chess.com; no OTB) after a 12-year layoff Iexcept for a small batch of games now and then on FICS). I'm interested in the whole fascinating subject of aging brains,  memory, concentration,  and chess  (and other brain-testers like Soduko, etc.).

Here's what I notice about my own play lately,  after 200+ "standard" games here.  Calculation of variations is really wearing.  It always was for me,  but the 'deterioration' in that area is really noticeable. I try to offset that with the tactical training,  and also the really excellent videos here,  especially by Rensch (I don't consider any of that 'work;' it is really enjoyable).

I'm interested in what changes others of you may be experiencing in your chessplaying - positive or negative (on the plus side for me, my endgame play is better - and the videos help a lot there, too.)

Yes, Tyson had a lot of difficulties after Cus D'Amato died. I think he helped keep Tyson on the straight and narrow and was a father figure to him.

I sort of met Tyson once. His side kick with the fuzzy white hair was with him.  I dropped a baby bottle and he was kind enough to reach down and pick it up for me.  Strange, he just didn't look that big and he really did look short.  :)

Thanks for the recent posts.

Apawndown: One of my problems in playing Chess is that my mind tends to wander a lot. That is not a new problem for me tho because in driving for example I've often had to be very very careful to keep my mind on the task at hand. Fortunately I've never had to drive for a living ( beyond operating farm machines  lol ).
