Chess for Oldtimers --- Good Idea !

I do things to do things.  I don't need some abstract background reason (like "stimulating my brain") to do it. Smile

AndyClifton: I used to do things to make a living, then I was downsized ( yes I used to be taller  lol ). One reason that I play Chess is because I like the game however I also have a rather selfish reason for playing, as we have been covering here in this thread.

Sorry Pellik, didn't know that you were coming to visit this thread or the timing of starting on a new page might have been better. Smile

Thanks for the photo AndyClifton.

Pellik: I do hope that you have had a chance to be around your Grandparents and other older relatives. Grandparents ( often being older folks ) are here to spoil their younger relatives, to tell them stories about the good old days, to fill the youngsters full of Cookies and Cake, stuff like that.

cabadenwurt

Oh and nearly forgot; Grandparents should also have enough spare time to teach youngsters how to play Chess  lol.

Ditto.  And (to repeat myself about depression's impact on the hippocampus), it's most likely the Enjoyment of the activity that's good for the brain.

So if you are someone who needs to have a "health" rationale to avoid guilt feelings about "Wasting time by Just having Fun" --- Science has Proven that Fun is Good for Your Brain!

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the nice post Motherinlaw. The idea that fun is good for the Brain makes me very happy ( an example of Good Science ). Smile

AndyClifton

I have to admit though...the idea that science has proven that something is fun somehow makes it seem just a wee bit less fun to me.

cabadenwurt

Well I can only assume that back in your younger days you may have been a rather rebellious fellow. Laughing

AndyClifton

Oh goodness no, I was meek as a lamb...

cabadenwurt

I just had a humorous thought. Earlier Pellick said that he was coming back to try to play a gag on us but he has not returned ( perhaps the young fellow forgot ? )  lol.

AndyClifton

Perhaps that was his gag.

cabadenwurt

Good point, perhaps he meant to try to get us to think that he had left a 2cnd message. Those darn youngsters are getting to be very sneaky.

So is this the chess-player's geriatric mumble-club? Don't know if I'm old enough to qualify... I was born in 1956.

AndyClifton

Next thing we know, pellik's gonna leave a bag of flaming dog crap on our porch.

Over the 21 pages of posts that we have gone thru in this thread we have had a very wide variety of people post here so I'm sure that you will fit right in. Also we have covered a number of different subjects here besides the benefits of playing Chess.

AndyClifton

Not that we remember any of them of course.

Well, I think you have to remember who Ella Fitzgerald is, but you cant remember who Justin Bieber is.

(BTW, I had to Google Justin Bieber)

AndyClifton

I remember who Shirley Hemphill was.

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the recent posts.

Well here in Canada we are stuck with Justin Bieber, mind you he is hanging out in Hollywood for a while I guess. I would prefer to listen to Ian and Sylvia anyways ( or Ella Fitzgerald ).
