old people shodnt drive or play chess. just prune juice

Javan64

You young wippersnapper! I hate prune juice (too much & it gives you a run for your money). What I really enjoy is smacking young wippersnappers with my cane! Cool

JimmyTheK

I checked out Prunejuice.com.

A lot easier and less challenging than Chess.com, I'll say that.

We all know about the many studies that tell us that as we age our brain begins to go downhill. Also the experts do give us some bit of hope tho that using the old grey matter can be helpful in slowing down the mental decline ( enter Chess and Bridge as fun games that also work the mind ). For example there are still a few players around who like myself actually started playing Chess BEFORE Bobby Fischer won the World Championship ( shocking but true  lol ). Before I ramble on too long here --- has any other long-term player noticed the benefits of playing Chess as a person ages ? Or any info on studies done in this area re the benefits of our game here ?

This thread is 16 months old, and your rating still sucks as bad as mine, so it's obviously just a waste of time, unless you just happen to like it. I'm not spending another cent on chess, to be sure.

Thanks for all of the recent posts.

JimmyTheK: I'm glad that you have returned to Chess. Playing here is good practice without affecting your USCF rating.

Javan64: Nice to see that you are keeping those youngsters in line ( give em heck ! ).

Eddiesalin:

Conflagration_Planet: You have not caught onto the reason why I keep playing Chess ( ie: for two very selfish reasons ). First of all I do very much enjoy playing the Game, however more importantly I use Chess as a fun form of mental exercise ( so as you can see it's all about me ). Smile

And about whom else should it be? Wink

Hey Thanks for visiting again Motherinlaw ! Yes it is not that often one can find a activity that is both fun and also beneficial at the same time. Many years ago when I was a young fellow I certainly liked doing things that were fun, but however they were not too beneficial. Innocent

I know that, but my point was that if you're not improving beyond our sad level, it's probably not helping your brain.

motherinlaw

I know I'm about to repeat myself, Again, ("perseveration" is a common symptom of "senility"), but here is my answer Again, at least in different words:

Playing chess activates the "chess-playing" area of the brain.  Increased blood flow to the "chess-playing" area doesn't "improve" the whole brain --- or even the functioning of presumably related prefrontal cortical areas. (See "cross-transference" in learning theory)

If you want your brain to continue functioning as optimally as possible as you age, Do things You Enjoy!  Absence of Pleasure leads to depression.  Depression leads to impaired Concentration.  Impaired concentration produces problems with functioning in Multiple areas of life.  Impaired functioning in Multiple areas of life triggers Depression, which interferes with Concentration, which .... (am stopping here to avoid further "perseveration...." Sealed Wink)

So here it is:  Enjoy playing chess!  If there is an aspect of your (and my) hobby that is not bringing you joy, Quit Doing That!  Your brain will thank you. (well, at least the "Geez, I am So relieved you got us out of That miserable situation" portion of your brain will thank you.)

There you have it.  No need to thank me.  No, really, I mean it -- Don't thank me for providing the information .... I Enjoyed it! Smile

"But psychedelic mother-in-law," he said in a Calvinist frenzy, "there must be something I can do to optimize the function of my brain forever." Imagines stacks of gold coins increasing at the rate  of inflation plus 2% into infinity.

Cool!  Great image -- apparently there's nothing like a "Calvinist frenzy" to optimize blood flow to ... the brain ...Undecided.

Please don't make me think about what optimal Calvinist "blood flow" is and what might cause it.

Thanks for all of the new posts.

Conflagration_Planet: If I am understanding your thoughts correctly then we need to makesome very serious changes in our Western lifestyles. For example we would need to permanently close about 90 to 95 percent of the Golf Course on the planet as the vast majority of Weekend-Duffers are just wasting their time ( ie: they are NOT improving ). The same for most of the Bowling Alleys because those gutter-balls are NOT going to cut it. Moreover most of our spare-time activities will have to go as they are NOT geared to self-improvement. It seems that you are leading us down a path to rather austere and may I add very very boring lifestyle ( was that your intention or not ? ).

I'm not saying you have to be a master level player to play. But most weekend bowlers, and golfers might well be duffers, but I figure even at that, they probably play a far better game than my chess. If you enjoy playing, go for it. I didn't say it should be illegal. I just don't know how you really get anything out of it at this level.
