Hello Chess.com members,

Since my username is FutureGM2001forlife and I been thinking about grandmasters, Is it possible for me to become a grandmaster? It may sound silly, but I am confident I can achieve that goal if that is possible. I know there are lots of grandmasters and what chance (percentage) do I have in order to achieve that title? Please let me know soon. I am 15 years old and my USCF rating is 1414.

Thanks!!!!

As far as I know of, you have to get a 2500 FIDE rating and get 3 grandmaster norms. I might be incorrect.

The USCF GM title should be quite similar.

How do I get a FIDE rating and where are FIDE tournaments? Are they not in the US? I hope not. I don't want to travel to other countries because I think it is unsafe.

ha there is no uscf Gm.  its strictly an achievement of exceptional accomplishments against a FIDE rated opponent in a valid chess tournaments.  (not all chess tournaments offer the opportunity to earn a norm).

and yes, you can go to tournaments within the USA that would count as a GM norm.

but first things first...

you got to quit being a patzer.

everyone freakin' guy here seems to claim that there will be exceptionally strong like next week- yet few people accomplish that.

this is why Becoming a GM is a really bad goal.  its too hard.  pick something you can accomplish... and get it done

If you are a "future GM" then tomorrow you will be a "future GM", so as the next day and the day after and always a "future GM for life". Sorry, but it simply is not possible in your lifetime to become a GM since you are a "future GM for life". Maybe after life you can become one?

Have you ever heard of people taking things step by step to accomplish a goal? There are goals to meet when achieving GM. I would take these goals one step at a time. It is possible to be GM.

IMpatzer

yes it used to be you had to go over to europe to get a gm norm but they changed the rule  for some who had not the funds to travel like that!

Well, let me ask you this.

Are you willing to put in the work?

As in be willing to study/play regularly, and make it your main hobby/activity that you do for say, at least the next 5-10 years?

Yes sir! I would be willing to put in the work! Chess is my favorite game but Basketball gets in the way sometimes. I say yes to all of things and it is possible to be GM!

Some body loche le thread please.

I think the kids who aspire to be GMs should at least reach the top 25 in their age group, which USCF gives ranking to. If you can reach that level, I think you have a chance to be a GM.

Currently, at your age and rating, you are not there yet - you have a higher chance than many who have posted/trolled before you, but as you said, you need to go step by step.

If you're serious, start by getting to the top 100 for age 16 in the US rankings.

I have ZERO chance of being a GM, or even IM, both because I don't want to be one, and probably because I don't have the potential, but even when I was 16, not too long ago (giving it away here lol tongue.png) I was ~70-80-ish on the top 100 list.

Cherub_Enjel

Strangely, it's tougher to get on top 100 for age 16 than for age 17.

To the OP: Being a GM is tough, and some say that you reach your peak level after around 7 years of serious chess study. In comparison, trying to reach top 100 for age 17 means you need to get +500 points in 2 years - can you do that?
