Towards the end of a league game last night we arrived at the following position, which I am posting from my side of the board as black.
For a few seconds I had the illusion that I could play Qc2+ followed by mate on e2, but of course that's rubbish because black is going up the board and the 'important' black pawn is really on e6 and what I thought was Qc2+ would have been Qf7+ followed by Kxf7 and white doesn't lose.
I suppose it is understandable because of the positioning of the white king and h pawn, plus our impression of the board from books with white always going up the board.
Next thing, my opponent resigned because he had suddenly noticed I could mate him - by 'Qc2+ etc'. He had exactly the same illusion as me from the white side!
I have seen various examples even from top level games where both players were similarly affected by such illusions as to what was really happening at the same time. I wonder why this happens? Has similar happened to any of you who read this?
