I've got it!
He's in a supermax prison. The screws,(guards) found some chess diagrams and figured he was tunneling his way out. Because as we all know, THOUSANDS of chess players have tunneled out of prison!
............He took pictures of the food, which got the cook KILLED, who was having an affair with the warden's wife and now the prison mafia is after chessrookies!
He's pretending to be a chessrookie, when in fact, he's an undercover D.E.A. agent who was sent in to break up the "notorious" chess gang that runs a drug & gun operation out of Calif prisons!

Wait a minute! I have an un-named source in The New York Times who has informed me that un-beknowsed to chessrookies, a "bug" was placed in his cell. Last month, before sentencing, he went on the Maury Povitch show where he was told; YOU ARE THE FATHER! Hence, the reason for the breakout. He has to raise his child, but you didn't hear it from me.
