Chess interest

What got you interested in chess? I was curious about this. I got hooked when my mom brought home a chess set from the store, and I just sat there playing with it for hours!

That is cool. I was originally drawn to chess when I was younger, I saw it as a game of intelligence a portal into higher state of mind. So, by chance one night my father casually discussed the topic of chess and offered to teach me. When this happened I raced to my room to find a cheap chess set in my closet that i had kept there in hopes that one day the mistaken gift would taught to me. And the rest is pretty self explanetory.

i was 2nd year high when my classmate taught me how to play chess becoz he has nobody to play with, after one week of playing he never beat me and he decided chess is not his cup of tea....but we remain good friends until now...it happenned 34 years ago...

I used to be a good player when i was younger coz it was a good game. But my interest has been reignited since recently having been beaten by a 7yr old kidSurprised

I played it a few times as a kid, but it was just another game that I'd play once in a while. I didn't really play it a lot. But I was sort of fascinated when I saw that there was a newspaper column about chess, books on the strategies, etc. I was curious to learn all the detail and strategy that were written about there, but in high school and college, I was too busy with other things.

As an adult in my 20's, I happened to play a casual game against a friend one day, and it reminded me of that earlier curiousity. I bought a book that taught me some of the rules of the game that weren't covered in the Milton Bradley box top that I'd learned from (ie castling, pawn promotion, en pessant, ...) as well as some basic strategy tips. Then I started playing on the internet, and eventually worked my way up to buying other books, playing in USCF tournaments, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I'll throw in my share.

I can't exactly remember when I first chess so it seems as though I've known it for all of my life. I've never really been "into chess" until a few years ago when someone from my high school's chess club challenged me to a chess game after finding out I knew how to play. That didn't completely get me into the game until my dad later "hired" someone (FIDE > 2000) to teach me in exchange for a really nice chess board (dad's is a professional when it comes to woodwork). Now I've been playing online ever since... haven't joined a chess club yet though.

It was kindergarten I guess when i first knew the game. That time I dont know how the game's played. I started playing chess when I was in my 3rd grade elementary, wasn't very good at it but I knew the moves and some rules such as castling (I don't know en passant at that time). I rarely played chess games after that and I recall playing it again when I was on my 6th grade and in my highschool years, then I stopped with no reason. I never was serious in that game before.

Not long ago, I played it again and fell inlove with the game and till now, I still do.

When I was 11 my cousin had a portable computer chess game and I was bugging him to teach me.  I just practised losing countless times to the com but slowly got better until I could whip my cousins butt. But then there were long gaps with out playing and my hunger was reingnited when at my new job a few of the guys are keen chess players and we have pretty intense games.

I used to play chess rarely with my sister when I was younger. I only really started this year when the natural curiousity aforementioned hit me and I searched for a nice site online to play, and naturally I came here. I'm just trying not to spend too much time here...

What got me interested in chess was the overall format of the game itself, and the potential for acquiring (or losing) things legally; i.e. chess cannot be regarded as gambling for obvious reasons, unlike playing certain games of cards for instance.
