Is there something Im missing??? you just can't take the pieces, right?  what rating does 2:30 correlate to?

If you did the test correctly you would be a budding chess genius, but I get the impression that some are not getting the gist of the test.

I'll repeat the terms of the test for everyone:

The black pawns are permanent and immobile, and they are coming down the board at you so they control b2,d2,e2,g2 etc.

Your task is to visit every square not controlled or occupied by the pawns and do it in sequence of a1 b1 c1 d1...h1 h2 f2 (note g2 is skipped as it is controlled by a black pawn--as will be d2 e2 b2 and the other squares on the board controlled by the pawns) c2 a2 a3 b3 d3 e3 and so forth. You criss-cross the board until you have reached in this manner a8.

You cannot take a pawn. If you land on a square controlled by a pawn, or on a pawn, that is a 10 second penalty.

You are required to move the knight in legal moves (I think some may just be picking up the knight like a rubber stamp and hitting squares to finish in a few seconds lol). The first maneuver to reach b1 is to move the knight from a1 to c2 to a3 to b1--first square reached. Now go from there to c1 in another maneuver.

If that isn't clear let me know.

I think my score those several decades ago was c. 6 minutes. Perfectly average I think.

Hmmmm . . . not sure I understand the problem.

You want the Knight moved to each of 51 squares during the puzzle, right? Omitting (from the 64 board squares) the start square, a1, and also omitting any square occupied by and threatened by a pawn.

If this is the case, I scored 15 minutes or so. Yup, not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

PS sorry goldendog, i didn't see your post.

It sounds like you understood the test. If you followed the criss-crossing sequence as you step up the board ranks and ended up at a8, you got the idea almost certainly.

dmerkal

you can't simply determine a person's iq from a person's ability to manuever a chess piece.

goldendog

You mean like I said in post #1?

jacksprat

this looks like a great problem..cant wait to try it!

goldendog

padman, you must be doing it right.

Right. You must do all the ranks one by one everyone (even the drunks).

About 3 3/4 minutes.

totalnovice12

lol looks like not many people read the instructions.. 18 moves and a single digit number of seconds seems quite small to cover 60 squares lol

GumboStu

about 15 minutes here too

@ goldendog- How do I do it?. Blindfold or can I try it by setting the pieces on a real chess board?

shine5

4:05 for me.

The_Young_Nite

2:38.52 Is my quickest time.

3:42.99 being my slowest

Online Chess IQ Test is here, https://tr.im/2nqM9

cyclopps

Complete 3:08, 151 moves, 0 errors

KassySC

1st try 3: 48, no erros 179 moves

2nd try 2:54, no errors, 159 moves

kkl10

1st attempt - ~8:35, 152 moves, no errors that I could tell (this was on the old chess.com live chess interface. It's possible to set up the board; v3 isn't working right now for some reason. Consequently, I didn't track the time accurately to the second, counted the moves manually, and can only hope that I didn't miss any errors)

2nd attempt (on the link provided by cyclopps, four post back) - 6:14, 157 moves, 2 errors

Hardly an IQ test, but possibly a reasonable (albeit very rough) assessment of chess skill. I'd say that it's an interesting stress for one's spatial ability for those unfamiliar with the basic heuristics of the game. It's very easy to learn the fastest sequence after the first trial, so improvement should be normal and the norm for everyone.

Those who claim 3 or less minutes on their first attempt are probably very familiar with the knight's moves and heuristics (by the way, this exercise was very rewarding because I became aware of knight's heuristics, which I previously ignored).

EDIT: 3rd attempt - 3:58, 159 moves, no errors. Doesn't really say much...
