Chess is a sport……

this fact is such a bitter pill for the online community to swallow.

For EVERYONE to swallow.

the only thing giving me hope is when I talked about chess, and one kid said smth like, it's not a sport and everyone else in the room went, YEAH IT IS!! But pretty much yeah...

Let me answer that. They are all physical. They all require some sort of physical interaction. They all require stragetic thinking. Chess doesn't need a physical board to be played. It does not require any physical interaction aside from calling out the notations "pawn to e4" "pawn to e5." They only require creating mental images and memory preservation, which are both mental skills. With that in mind, if anything that just requires 'mental strain' can be labeled a sport, why isn't school? Why aren't most memory games labeled as sport? To me, chess is a sort of "meta-sport" because it currently doesn't encapsulate the requirements that all other sports have. It's a meta, and I'm sure that in the future sport will come to encapsulate the game of chess, but right now? It doesn't, at least to me, and I'm sure other people share this perspective of mine.

you never let me answer it, and boo hoo and your tilted perspective.

Only the people that play chess would call it a sport cuz like, we understand the logic, all y'all are too braindead and afraid, includes you as well.

1. "you never let me answer it" Because you fell asleep or left right after. I'm not gonna wait to get my point across just to forget it.
2. "boo hoo and your tilted perspective" we can all have opinions yes? it isn't "tilted," it just differs from your own.
3. "only the people that play chess would call it a sport" - I play chess pretty much daily. OTB, I'm in clubs, I've been in unrated tourneys in my city, etc. I still don't think it qualifies as a sport. And people who play the game agree with me. We may not be plentiful, but we share the same reasoning due to looking at the objectives and reasons why each "sport" is considered a sport.
4. "all y'all are too braindead and afraid, includes you as well" - When having a discussion or debate on opposing views, I don't think resorting to name calling helps your case at all whatsoever. Furthermore, I've been completely civil, so why start calling people with opinions that differ from yours "braindead?" This is an open discussion, and people should be treated with respect, not like what your showing right now. Give me logic and reasoning rather than insults and personal feelings. Pathos and logos are fine uses as well, as I did on my original comment.

You ignore that respected organizations prove this, that makes you braindead. Bro I am showing respect, and everything I said... it's true.

So I'm braindead because I have an opinion that opposes the vast majority? No. Clearly I am a sensible person, but I don't agree with the reasoning with chess being a sport. You can call it a sport, and I honestly don't care, but I just wanted to put my opinion out there and get real feedback, not just be hurled an insult like "braindead" and cast aside. I want real input, not this superficial name-calling.

"opposes the vast majority" Yeah basically, you seem like and idiot to most.

"I don't agree" Who said you had to? It's just dumb if you don't.

" 'braindead' " That's not name calling, it's true.

How is it dumb if I have an opinion that differs from the majority? You don't see me calling you dumb or stupid for not sharing an opinion, and I'm clearly not braindead. Degrading me doesn't help convince me nor does it do anything to universalize your viewpoint.

Nor is the majority. There are plenty of examples of the majority being wrong that goes back centuries. This entire argument is built on personal opinions and I'm just trying to share mine in a way where we can have a CIVIL discussion.

Chess is a board game, quite literally, by definition.

(Really. Look up the definition of chess in your dictionary of choice, and see what it says.)

yes it is

I mean there is a board involved, and it is a game with the ability to be played, so I guess that would be the logical conclusion...

MaetsNori

Or we could be new-age and define chess however we like. We could call it a "sport" or a "dance", or perhaps a "cooking show" ... tongue.png

Although in all seriousness, OTB bullet is something that I'd agree approaches the realm of physical "sport". Players standing and slapping the clock in a fury, arms swinging, pieces getting knocked over left and right ...

Classical chess, though? I don't personally consider it a sport. You can sip on your latte, close your eyes, and lean back in your chair to nap between moves ...

Finally, I can call chess what it truly is; an existential crisis waiting to happen!

Considering the fact that chess is more widely played online, you could make the argument that chess could be an "e-sport" if you stretch it far enough. The Pogchamps 6 tourney could be alluded to when making this claim.

@AGC-Gambit_YT he's kinda right you aren't giving any real arguments

humzini1

(right about you not chess)

BasixWhiteBoy

It's classified as a sport, but only because it's popular and played worldwide. It's a game and shouldn't be a sport. But officially, I suppose we have to live with the fact that it is.

I mean he has appealed to authority but aside from that he's just been semi-insulting my opinion while telling everyone else they're right. Most people with the original argument against chess being a sport haven't spoken up like prior, so I don't know if they can give their arguments so that I can compare and contrast but ehhh... Doesn't matter.

I was thinking about this one earlier. Why is chess considered a sport? Other games aren't and they're similar to chess, so why? And yeah I think what you said is perfectly accurate.

BasixWhiteBoy

Because of its popularity worldwide, I would guess.

Pretty sure one of the older grandmasters fron the 1970s (maybe less) playing against another is what kicked off the popularity, and it's been growing ever since, so corps and people had to conform with the game's growing popularity. Poetry was also a sport a looooooooong time ago and now it isn't, most likely because it fell out of favor.
