No one can memorize all the positions that can occur on the chess board. If it were that simple every engine would play perfect chess. Just imagine when engines like alpha zero and leela haven't solved chess after playing millions of games than how naive is your assumption that chess is all about memorization.

Yes they can, but only a handful. That's why there are so few GMs in the world. Only a handful or however many actually have an eidetic memory.

You are either trolling or you have no idea about the number of positions that can occur on the chess board.

Go sit down and play some 10-year old GM, and then you tell me that kid doesn't have every single move counter move memorized in his head when he wipes the floor with you.

So you are a low intellectual troll.

Do you feel better about yourself by putting other people down? Big chess man....

That's right. Chess is all about memorizing moves and counter moves. There are no openings, or endgames, or tactics. There are a finite amount of moves and the best players are the ones who memorize thousands of counters in their heads. Odds are if you are playing a good player and you make a move, if that player is good he knows the perfect move to make to counter because he has every single possible move memorized in his or her head. That is why I suck so much at chess and will never be good at it. My memory is quite poor and I am unable to memorize thousands of moves. That's why 360 is probably a better game overall, but regular chess blows. The best players in the world all have eidetic memories. There is very little skill in chess, only memorization. That is why chess is boring and stupid. Discuss.

this is boring and stupid.

discuss.

No, chess is boring.........and you know it....(whispers)

i suppose you are right.

Although there are a finite ways to move there are still millions of moves in sequence that can be made. Your competition probably plays inferring you think rationally so throw them off sometimes. Also no one is prefect that's why a computer will always beat a person so unless you're playing some Grand master most people will slip up.

Yes it’s good

(Im replying to the original post not any posts made after) Chess is about practice and time anyone can beat the world champion with practice the only problem is time people just don't have it often that's why people with lots of time to practice excel at chess Sure memorization plays a role but memorization comes with time you remembered how to walk right?  well if you play chess enough then it will come to you like walking

This isn't about whether chess relies exclusively on memorization. This is about what constitutes "boring" and to whom. Chess may seem boring and stupid to you but it's a perfectly fine hobby for many people. Personally, I think football is stupid and boring. I'm sure at least half the world disagrees.

I find soccer BORING, but its the most popular sport in the world.  So maybe its me :-)

Baseball is my thing, but others find it boring.

Its nice to be able to disagree.

I can "memorize" a book on open heart surgery, but i doubt anyone would want me to crack their chest open and operate on them.

sorry  brother,

My daily chess is much better than my live chess. This proves the more time I have to think about a move, the better I will do. It is more to do with tactics and positioning and less with memorization. It is more about tactics, and the better you can counter another person's move. I have won the first round of 3 out of 4 tournaments now. And am waiting for second rounds to come up still!

There are more possible outcomes in chess than there are stars in the sky. That is in the trillions. I was doing great for a while and then went on a bit of a losing streak. I am not down about it. I just have to get out of the slump and start visualizing the board again. Open your mind and see the board. I love chess for its competitiveness! I am 59 years old and re-learning chess as I have played little since I was a child and young man.

My short term memory is really bad which is why I don't excel at chess.

But this guy says you don't excel at chess because you're stupid:

10 year old GMs don't exist but...

If I played a GM and I got to look at a database I'd still lose.

If you played me and you got to look at a database you'd still lose (even worse than I'd lose to the GM heh).

Lol. Talent is a thing. Magnus went from expert to grandmaster in a span of three years.

That is not entirely accurate my friend. Nimzoviche wrote, "...chess is played at a sub-conscious level." To try to remember all the continuations your entire mind is capable of retaining in memory would drive you"bats." Suggested lit. Sam. chess after the Japanesse stlye. It boils down to the mood you are in. If you are always bored? then you are always boring.

Oh they do indeed exist, but yes I'm sure I would lose to you too because I suck at chess. My memory just isn't up to par. Debilitating diseases can have that effect on your mind unfortunately.
