Chess is NOT a sport!!!

I will ask this a second time.  What is the definition of basketball?  Please don't give me 'it's a sport' as an answer because if I ask for the definition of tennis you just can't keep answering me with 'it's a sport'.  I have no resource here.  Please.

I agree. I don't consider Chess a sport either. It is a game. A great game, requiring more skill to play well than just about any other game, but a game nontheless. BTW, did you see the highlights of the hotdog eating contest from Coney Island yesterday (7/4). Fifty Nine hotdogs (yes, 59!) in ten minutes. Now THAT is a sport!

Please read my last post, we are NOT debating the physicality of chess (there is NONE) but rather the definition of CHESS itself.

STICK TO THE TOPIC, PEOPLE!!!

Well, I haven't looked up an official definition but my understanding is that chess is a competitive game of skill and preparation. Are we saing that a game can't be a sport? Plz don't make me read through all 14 pages!

I would like to say that I have gotten more of a workout from chess than I ever have playing baseball and that chess is infinitely more interesting to watch.

Chess my friend, is everything.

Chess is obviously a sport of the mind, not a physical sport.  Just like there are contact and non-contact sports, eg. tennis vs. soccer.  Chess is like THE sport for the brain

You summarized what i wanted to say, definatly ur right, sports might be by foot, hands, heads, or mind.!!

now imagine three scenarios after this 14 page long dragging "discussion" with no light at the end of the tunnel, as both sides claim they see since they are convinced they have proven their point.

1) Some comedy show took this debate and had 2 kids argue this against each other.  Regardless of what side you are on, you must admit it would be a hilarious show

2) Take everyone who argues this as a sport and have them agrue it against a team of American Football Players...LOL!

3) Have a real legitimate "debate" almost presidential style with these two sides warring against each other.

These situations would be really funny... but so are some things that you guys have said.

"It is quite clear that the NON SPORT advocates have clobbered the SPORT advocates" on the 4th page of 14 (and counting)!

By ExiledCanuck

"Dictionaries describe language they do not prescribe definitions."

Wait..so all of those descriptions aren't......definitions...... your kidding.... so when I look a word up it isn't a.....

That's just two... im sure we could all look up some more interesting quotes of what people have said here.  That said I do think chess is only a game.. I think that cheater_1 has actually made quite a coherent argument (if you piece all his facts together and elminiate his humor?).  If chess is a sport, what board game with lots of skill wouldn't be?  Someone argued that if you played football without moving it would still be a sport... does that mean video GAMES are a sport too?  Please... no dictionaries... just common sense should tell us that such an analytical game as chess is not a sport.  At best call it an intellectual excercise :)

(wow I cannot believe I just got sucked into this... its like a blackhole.... )

Chess is not considered as a sport in Australia because it does not fit into the definition of sport.

If I hear one more time that chess is a SPORT, I'm going to go BALLISTIC. Chess is not--even in the LOOSEST sense--a sport. Don't argue with the FACTS. Trust me, you won't win this one. Oh, I'm sure a few TROLLS out there, a few FLAMERS will defend the "sportiness" of chess, but I will reduce them to quivering masses of jello in short order.

Here are just a few definitions of sport:

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

An active diversion requiring physical exertion.

A specific diversion involving physical exercise and having a set form and body of rules.

Physical activity engaged in for pleasure.

Do you all see the common thread of the most NECESSARY element that is needed inorder for something to be considered a sport? PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.

There is no physical activity in chess, period! Never has been, never will be. Once again, I'm sure there will be some of you out there grasping at straws.....so:

Physical activity: Energetic action or movement pertaining to the body as distinguished from the mind or spirit.

PERIOD! CASE CLOSED! END OF DISCUSSION! I REST MY CASE!

There is no need to respond to this commentary. It is merely posted here for clarification purposes only.

Now, sit back, and watch to see who the REAL TROLLS and FLAMERS are.

hint: they will be the ones who cant resist responding to this topic with anger and argument. You may as well try to argue that we live on the moon.

 I agree

right on screekdawg.

Well, the evidence is OVERWHELMING: The NON SPORTERS have won!!! Actually, we won long ago, but now it seems the vast majority sees the light. No more are we debating the definition of SPORT, but the definition of CHESS.

Most of the posters tried to see if the definition of sport could be applied to chess INSTEAD of the real debate: Can what chess IS be applied to sport. BIG DIFFERENCE, PEOPLE.

If I were to ask you all to give me the definition of what Professional Ice Hockey is, I get the feeling all of you would break out the Oxford Dictionary and give me a definition of Fist Fighting instead of the actual definition of Hockey. Please, let this topic END here and now. I really dont want to be responsible for it going over 300 posts. 283 is fine with me.

I thought the only interesting question remaining was what the definition of sport was.

only once if you understand the meaning of " I rest my case "

if not, go for it as often as you feel the need

I agree with u 789159 and and a lot of other peoples too.

Chess is a game for fun and can be serious for sport.

I have been scouring every major encyclopedia and dictionary on the planet in the last 3 days regarding the topic of chess. I have been scouring the www from one end to the other. I have been reading every publication that deals with chess that I can find at the bookstores and libraries. Billions and billions of words later, I have yet to see the one word that I was searching for....SPORT. It NEVER occurred even once in the millions of chess articles I read. It seems only in the FAIRYTALE world that about 45% of chess.com users live in, is chess considered a sport.
