Chess is NOT a sport!!!

EXILED, I have already won. The debate is over. But I welcome any and all arguments--particularily the SPORT ilk. I like to analyze their reasons..get in their heads...try to comprehend THEIR side as to why they think chess is a sport. These are the type of people who are either TROLLS or honestly see the world in a different way....crosswired.....shortcircuited...ignorant...misguided. I want to help them see the light. I am trying to do GOOD, ok?

It's kind of like being the heavyweight boxing champ of the world giving some loudmouthed fan a shot at the title. The heavyweight takes a few punches to make it look good and then DEMOLISHES the upstart. I like reading all the SPORT supporter's comments. If you want to "win" my debate for me...feel free. I am not the only one on this stage. I share. The more people behind me, the more serious I will be taken.

As for the amount of physical activity needed, I'd go so far as to say ANY physical activity is needed. ANY amount. In chess, just lifting your arm and moving it into position, poised to pick up a chess piece, expends MORE ENERGY than moving the piece itself. There is NO exertion in moving a chess piece. PERIOD!  We expend more energy blinking our eyes or breathing.

Play darts and you will see the physicality involved. INDEED, the physicality of darts is THE MOST ESSENTIAL component of whether one is good or not. When's the last time you saw a bedridden double amputee DOMINATE the dart scene? NEVERRRRRR!

Please EXILED resign your position. You seem to be the only one adamant in saying I am wrong. I have used your own sources to befuddle and confound you. I am getting pretty close to putting you in the NUMBER 1 slot of cheater_1's TROLL LIST.

cheater_1

LOOMIS, you big lumbering TROLL you. I have now added you to my NUMBER 1 slot on my TROLL list. Congratulations! It seems you have ERIK-ITIS.

What's ERIK-ITS, you ask? According to the cheater_1 dictionary of all that is true and real in the world today, ERIK-ITIS is a disease of the human character whereby the afflicted person scours many sources (dictionaries, internet, enyclopedias, etc.) to find something --anything-- that supports his or her claim and then touts that source as the definitive source on everything.

There is no cure for this disease. The prognosis is grim. Common sense is something you learn by the age of 6.  If you aint got it by now, there is no hope.

I told you all the debate is OVER.

Rael

When's the last time you saw a bedridden double amputee DOMINATE the dart scene? NEVERRRRRR!

What if he used like, one of those Stephan Hawking's robot chairs with a robot arm that can be calibrated to shoot bullseyes? Or would that be cheating?

/I'm happy with people calling things whatever they like

//for instance, I think the moon is a silver dollar

///but then, I'm a poet, and all terminology is therefore ghostly and slippery

////I'm just trying to be a good sport!

OK, I've pretty much stopped posting in these threads, but I have to ask you cheater_1.... Why do you completely ignore solid arguments against your position such as Loomis' and attack only the ones where fault is more easliy found? Do we assume that since you have no apparent argument to Loomis that he is right?
cheater_1

Because BASEBALLFAN, LOOMIS is a TROLL. Plain and simple. I am coming to think that you are too. You follow me around and ALWAYS, 100% time, make posts that are 100% contrary to mine. I don't think we need to ask oxford of what that makes you.

I have layed out the facts. I have made my case. I have demonstrated  beyond a shadow of a doubt that chess is not a sport.

My troll list is growing by the minute.

Loomis

Oh, I get it, anyone who disagrees with cheater_1 is a troll.

Did I scour every source available to make my arguement? No, I went to the one source that cheater_1 claimed to be citing. It was pretty easy.

No doubt cheater_1 will claim that I am a troll because I used mildly insulting remarks. Of course, I was just trying to speak in the same manner of language he does so that he could understand me.

Now I remember why I never posted in his threads before. Never show reason to someone who ends the first post of a thread with bold red letters proclaming "I'm right, you're wrong, case closed."

cheater_1
I'll tell you why TOPALOV wouldnt shake hands, it's because he's a POOR SPORT. He exhibited UNSPORTSMANSHIP to the worst degree. I would ban both of them for playing in ANY chess event for 1 year.
exiledcanuck

Ummm... I am actually not using any sources.  There in lies a massive hole in my arguement.

I am just argueing against the flaws in your logic.

Definitions you are currently using seem to state that Tag and most other school yard games are sports.  These activities are in my opinion CLEARLY games.  Yet it seems you would argue they are actually sports.

I'm off to work, but I would like to once again point out that your entire arguement hinges on sports requiring physical exertion.  This has been argued against and you seem content to just ignore counter arguement.  Your definition states one thing, reality states something different.

To use your darts element.  Walking up to the board and removing the pieces takes more energy than the art of throwing the darts.  Standing up and sitting down between rounds takes more energy.

As a final note before I take my leave for the afternoon, have you ever actually found your "I win, I declared it already" tactic to work? From just a brief look at history it seems you only ever use this policy when you have actually lost (vote chess game 2008)

Once again, WRONG.... Go back and look at the thread where you first told us all about cannibal. I was actually one of the few people who publically said that I believed you. In what way is that contrary to you?

cheater_1

I'VE saved my ACE IN THE HOLE for the end. I have been waiting, watching, testing, but no one has posted the definition of CHESS. SHAME ON YOU ALL. It has been killing me to wait til post #100, but I had to.

Once again, I am consulting a branch of the OFFICIAL OXFORD WEBSITE. The only difference from LOOMIS' website is that it is the free version. What? You think the defintions are watered down or incorrect? You think that because it's free it's not credible? You people are making me sick to my stomach. What dope pays to get a defintion? YIKES!!

CHESS • noun a board game for two players, the object of which is to put the opponent’s king under a direct attack, leading to checkmate.

For the THIRD time I rest my case. How many times must I rest my case. Is there no end to the amount of trolls that this topic can attract?

I think I just wandered into a den of trolls. GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!

cheater_1
I stand corrected BASEBALL FAN.

So you think the definition of sportsmanship is to call everyone who is winning an argument against you a troll?  You haven't even tried to prove Loomis wrong, because he's not. He is right so you degenerate into the internet equivalent of a five year old who insults his opponents because he knows he is losing.

sorry couldnt resist

Loomis

Cheater_1, I made no reference to the fact that the version you cited is free. So why do you claim that is the basis of my argument? Oh yeah, because you always argue against things that aren't presented.

You claim that the only difference between the the website you are citing and the one I cited is the price. Except that either the definitions are different or you are not listing all the definitions in your version (i.e.,  you're cheating ;-)).  Incidentally, I don't pay for the subscription to OED that I use, so I guess I'm not the dope you're thinking of.

It's  not that the definitions you used are watered down or incorrect, it's that

a) You made a false claim of getting them from the Oxford English Dictionary

b) There are accepted definitions of the word that don't include the one phrase you make your case on.

As for your most recent "proof" it's the shoddiest yet! The dictionary also defines "football" as "A game...".   So, is football not a sport?

WhoShotTheSheriff

It's a sport.

What loomis said does bring about an interesting question though; When does a game officially become known as a sport as well?

u789159
You yourself said that tennis is both a sport and a game.  Are you saying that chess cannot be the same way?
cheater_1

Once again people, you are not seeing the forest because the trees are in your way. You all FAILED my test. Not one person actually cited the definition of what we are actually talking about...CHESS.

CHESS • noun a board game for two players, the object of which is to put the opponent’s king under a direct attack, leading to checkmate.

http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/chess

I have manipulated this conversation from the get go. Why is it that no one actually defined chess? Hmmmmmmmmm. I wonder why. Is it because I used a jedi mind trick and didnt allow anyone here to do it? Perhaps. Remember, I have a minor in psychology and have been manipulating you people all along. I think I should go back and get a major in reverse psych.

The game is over. I have tipped my hand once again. Why is it that you people degenerated into a debate over the words that I used to describe chess? Just look it up in any dictionary or encyclopedia and see that it is a board game.

I keep setting the trap and you people keep getting whacked. When will you learn that once you take the cheese, you'll get your neck broken by a metal bar whacking down across you?

Please, no more troll posts. I grow weary of this debate. Topics over 100 posts should be deleted by the admin.

Rael

Are two terms mutually exclusive for something?

A beer is also a beverage. A sandwich is also a meal. A car is also a vehicle.

Can something be BOTH a game and a sport?

/if it matters, I don't think chess is a sport, but that's not the point

//call it whatever you like...

WhoShotTheSheriff

Chess is a sport because you decide who wins by playing better.
